We had another excellent meeting today, with an uplifting talk on the Cancer Resource Centers of Mendocino by Anya Jindrich.
Rotarians attended included Margaret, Trevor, Pam, Toby, John Cottle, Michael Brown, Leon, Jeff, Brandt, Gary Hopper, Susan Keller, Matt Davis and Speaker Anya, a total of 13.
We opened at 12:00 with the pledge, and did pin checks and happy dollars after which we inducted Trevor.
Margaret said the meetings with the District Governor had gone well, and said he had played the accordion and used the music of different countries to illustrate his theme of building friendships.
Anya described the CRC, an NGO that had been established in Mendocino to help people with cancer navigate their way through the logistical, emotional and financial problems they might encounter. Starting from a base in Mendocino town it now serves Fort Bragg and Ukiah, employs 6 staff, helps about 115 new persons per year and supports about 500 persons in total, located throughout the county. Given the rural nature of the county, transport to medical facilities was often a problem and they relied on 18 persons to drive persons needing such support to various destinations. Support was also provided for other needs, such as translating diagnoses and prescriptions written in medical terms into more easily understandable language. The services provided are free, and the Center has an annual budget of about $600,000. Although somewhat similar centers exist in Arcata and Berkeley, they serve only women whereas the Mendocino Center serves both men and women. We talked about the needs of our community, the difficulty of navigating the obstacles alone and the value provided by the Center.
Following Anya's talk we turned to the Dinner Raffle and the Golf Tournament. Although almost all the tickets for the raffle have been parceled out to club members, ticket sales probably amount to only half the target at present. We urged club members to get out and sell their tickets, and if they could not sell them to return them so others could do so. We are aiming at a drawing at the end of August, so now is the time to get it done.
Gary circulated a flyer, list of hole sponsors and request letter for the golf tournament, to be held on October 19. He said the Grove had contributed $500, and urged club members to sell hole sponsorships.
Jeff talked about the opportunity for members to join a committee or committees of their choice, and urged new members in particular to join several.
We concluded at 1:00 sharp with thanks to Margaret for organizing and conducting the meeting so well.
Our next meeting will be a Board meeting on Thursday August 15 at 12:00 in Preston Hall. Margaret will get out an agenda. Jeff Stubbs, Secretary
