Dear Ms. Courtney,
This is a continuation from the GuideStar article here:
http://trust.guidestar.org/blog/top-strategic-mistakes-nonprofits-make-part-2
The ninth one listed is 'Failing to view marketing $ as an investment'.
Look at your Form 990s. And your so-called audits. Do you _have_ any
marketing dollars, Ms. Courtney?
Here's your last Form 990:
http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/680/680050440/680050440_201406_990.pdf
What you're looking for is on page ten. It's next to Item 12. Yeah.
It's called 'Advertising'. The one with a zero next to it. Now look
at your so-called audit for that year:
http://kzyx.org/Board/audits/MCPB%20FY%202014%20Audit.pdf
It's on page twelve. See any advertising? What about marketing? I
see no marketing investment, Ms. Courtney. What do you see?
Okay. Let's look at your budget for this year. Line eighteen.
You've got $2,600 budgeted for 'Advertising/Promotion'. With a
memo next to it: 'Mainly trades: UW spots for publication ads'.
I don't get it, Ms. Courtney. Underwriting -- UW -- is revenue.
Or it's supposed to be. If it's 'mainly trades', why is there
any expense? And compared to a $600,000 budget, shouldn't that
amount be higher? You've got $16,620 budgeted for 'professional
services', Ms. Courtney. Including 'Legal services'. Couldn't
underwriting be traded for that? Are lawyers an investment, Ms.
Courtney? For what???
Look at KMUD's Form 990 for 2014:
http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/942/942789780/942789780_201412_990.pdf
They view marketing $ as an investment. To the tune of $20,796.
And they spent -- ZERO -- on lawyers last year. It's all on
page ten of their latest Form 990. If you can count that high.
Sincerely,
Scott M. Peterson
