Dear Ms. Courtney,

This is a continuation from the GuideStar article here:

http://trust.guidestar.org/blog/top-strategic-mistakes-nonprofits-make-part-3

The tenth one listed is 'Not considering partnerships'.

Remember KMEC, Ms. Courtney? KZYX had a partnership with them. Once.

KZYX accepted money for that partnership. As 'restricted' donations.

Until John Coate came along. Then he rebranded it. As the 'so-called

Restricted Savings Account'. Right here:

http://www.kzyx.org/images/pdf/gm_reports/Oct%2008%20GM%20report.pdf

Then he looted that account, Ms. Courtney. As a so-called loan. From

a partner. Without the partner's permission. I've got a word for that,

Ms. Courtney -- wrong.

Now KZYX is opening a studio in Ukiah. Something that Mr. Coate said

was 'in the wrong location for our technical needs.' But now it's in

the right location. Suddenly. Without KMEC. But with all the money it'd

promised to KMEC. Nice.

You've got another partnership to consider, Ms. Courtney. The one with

the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. With the non-compliance policy

that you seem to have forgotten about. And the restricted donations. The

ones that KZYX treated just like KMEC's. By throwing them all into the

'general pot'. And under the bus. Failing to consider your partnerships.

There's one more partnership to consider, Ms. Courtney. The one with

your members. Your sponsors. And your listeners. Through your policy.

Can you spell, Ms. Courtney? That's P-O-L-I-C-Y. Policy. The things

that nonprofit Directors are supposed to follow. They're all written

down. On the KZYX website. Can you read, Ms. Courtney? Good partners

should be able to do both. If not, then maybe they should pack it up.

Sincerely,

Scott M. Peterson
