Norman.
Nothing is worth a serious discussion while people like bb continue to be allowed to participate in listserves and chooses to denigrate those she opposes or for whom she has a personal dislike. Today we've moved from "pig", "paranoid", "alcoholic" to being called "bigots". I have consistently asked for civility and what is returned is anything but civil. Clean up the list serve or stop asking for modes of expression. It's useless to attempt a discussion in this overtly hostile atmosphere propagated by an uncivilized few.

Rather than spending more time on "right or wrong", let's ask
the question: How are and to whom are the Members able
to express their views, opinions and suggestions regarding
programming?

David, why are you so reactive? Your job would be affirmed if there was a better fit (philosophically & operationally) between the station and community. Job stress would be lowered, business would be attracted to support the station, and all could prosper with a new sense of mission. I personally know of several thousand dollars that go elsewhere due to perceptions of the station.
I really am perplexed with this overreaction. Does the station need a shrink? ~BC

Its programming and operational philosophy is controlled by its membership, which is open to all.
Dear David,
What part of the word "and" don't you understand?
It is grammatically correct to use the word "is" to refer to both,
due to the presence of the compounding qualifier "and".
If you diagrammed this sentence, it would break down to:
(1) Its programming is controlled by its membership,
which is open to all.
AND
(2) Its operational philosophy is controlled by its membership,
which is open to all.
Hence the use of the singular form of the verb in this instance.
Your argument for the plural "are" applies only when compounding two plurals.
Please review "Compounding Sentences" chapter of your fourth-grade grammar book.
If the two were separately controlled by distinctly different entities,
They would not be joined by the word "AND" in this sentence.
The Mission Statement assigns control
of programming
AND
operational philosophy
to its membership
which is additionally qualified as
"open to all".
Please also note
the absence of the words
"General Manager"
"Program Coordinator"
"Board of Directors"
or any reference
to their roles in this regard.
Management and Coordination
are essential to KZ's successful
fulfillment of its grant requirements.
(Grants that were obtained
on the basis
of its Mission Statement, BTW.)
So they do have an obligation here . . .
The membership entrusts the Board

is capable of doing so.
As Diane pointed out,
it involves the skill to
work with, rather than merely exclude
controversial opinions/issues.
Yes, skillful means are required.
This is the challenge that faces all
Community Radio Stations
in these times, as
this is the true essence
of Democracy,
which we find the newly-landed
so eager to corrupt
in favor of Oligarchy.
oligarchy |ˈäliˌgärkē; ˈōli-|noun ( pl. -chies)a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution : the ruling oligarchy of military men around the president.• a state governed by such a group : the English aristocratic oligarchy of the 19th century.• government by such a group.
.
Sincerest thanks to Norman for bringing this up.
And revealing management's
(current) attitude
toward its own mission statement.
Who does NOT have "control" over content?
Well, by law . . .
Underwriters.
And, according to MCPB's Mission Statement . . .
Staff
and Board.
If the above are working in coordination,
against development of
creatively and professionally produced
(local) programming

Good morning Norman.
The Mission Statement, as posted on our website and cited by you in your email, is as follows:
KZYX&Z, 90.7, 91.5 and 88.1, is the community non-commercial radio station of Mendocino County, serving several counties in Northern California. Its programming and operational philosophy is controlled by its membership, which is open to all. Through its dedication to balanced, excellent programming, Mendocino County Public Broadcasting reflects the rich diversity of the county, while promoting a sense of community across a large and varied area. The finest in national public radio programs is made available, as well as local programs that are creatively and professionally produced, responding to the needs of the community.
If one follows both the words and phrasing, as well as the grammer and punctuation, the content of the Mission Statement clearly states that the station's ". . .programming and operational philosophy is controlled by its membership." Note the use of "is" in lieu of "are". It states a singular item, i.e. "the . . . philosophy is controlled by its membership." Therefore, neither programming nor operations are controlled by the membership. Only the philosophy. "Philosophy", as you know, is the theory or attitude held by a person or organization that acts as a guiding principle for behavior. The membership can guide the programming and operational philosophy but the membership does not control prtogramming or operations.

Norman is incorrect. The mission statement does NOT state that "programming and operations is controlled by the membership."

Good Morning All…..
This is interesting reading and worthy of review:
KZYX Mission Statement
KZYX&Z, 90.7, 91.5 and 88.1, is the community non-commercial radio station of Mendocino County, serving several counties in Northern California. Its programming and operational philosophy is controlled by its membership, which is open to all. Through its dedication to balanced, excellent programming, Mendocino County Public Broadcasting reflects the rich diversity of the county, while promoting a sense of community across a large and varied area. The finest in national public radio programs is made available, as well as local programs that are creatively and professionally produced, responding to the needs of the community.
KZYX&Z pledges to be a responsible and responsive county-wide medium for news, information, music, performing arts, entertainment, and local features. KZYX&Z sees its programming as a complement to the work of Mendocino's commercial media. The station seeks to foster increased communication among all groups in the county and makes access available to all points of view.
. . . from KZYX website
Interesting to note that programming and operations is controlled by the membership.
