Hi everyone in California,
Thank you all so much for your support, Rotary is truly an international organisation. The force of the eruption in Tonga on Jan15th is believed to be twice that of your Mount St Helens.
The Tongan community in NZ is very family orientated and has always been important for the Tongan economy.Other organisations have also been very supportive and many container loads of goods are on their way to Tonga.Food security is an issue there, and I remember visiting the gardens RNZWCS helped to foster in 2017.This meant fencing out roaming pigs and keeping hens coralled so seeds are not dug up, and eggs could be found while still fresh.
The NZ Navy have taken over a desalination plant, for water, but food resources and restoring shelter is going to be a long term need. The ash has destroyed their crops and fruit trees.RNZWCS have very reliable partners they work with there, and you can be assured that any donations of money will be well spent.I have forwarded your letters to Stuart Batty of RNZWCS and he is very encouraged by your support.
Kind regards,
PP Ann Owen Katikati Rotary Club,
Executive member of D9930 Rotary Foundation

Former D9930 representative RNZWCS Board 2014-2017

Hello, Jeff, Ann and all,
Thank you, Jeff, for putting us in touch with Ann Owen at Katikati Rotary Club, and the RNZWCS web site with information on how to contribute to support relief efforts in Tonga following the recent volcanic eruption and its devastating impact on Tonga. I have just made a personal donation, and I will also bring RNZWCS to the project grants committee of my club (Rotary Club of Eugene Metropolitan, Oregon). I will propose a similar contribution to what you are proposing to the Rotary Club of Mendocino.
Let's stay in touch. Jeff and Ann, your updates, and putting us in touch with NZWCS are sincerely appreciated!
All the best,
Kathy Poole

Folks, here is the link for the Rotary support mentioned below. Please see the sections on ERKs (Emergency Response Kits) and the separate section on the right side of the page headed "News" which describes the relief effort underway following the Tonga volcanic eruption.

I am going to suggest our club contribute $1,000 and will put together a proposal for our next Board meeting, on January 27.
Hoping Fort Bragg, Eugene and East Santa Rosa or perhaps District 5130 will join in this effort.

Dear Mendocino, Eugene Metropolitan, Fort Bragg and District 5130 Rotarians (the latter three through Kathy, Gary, Barb and Julie),
As informed by our colleague Ann Owen in Katikati, New Zealand, International relief for Tonga following the recent volcanic eruption is being coordinated by Rotary New Zealand World Community Service, RNZWCS, and they have a website on which one can donate for either an Emergency Response Kit (ERG) which is similar to a shelter box but half the price and better suited to the needs of the Pacific, or specifically for Tonga volcanic eruption disaster relief.
Please google RNZWCS, read through their website and donate as an individual. You can be sure the funds will be well used.
We are updating our club budget and I will be making a proposal for use of club funds for Tonga, probably routed through RNZWCS, at our next Board meeting, a week from today.
For those of us who are less familiar with the South Pacific, New Zealand often takes the lead in support for the more eastern Pacific Island countries, while Australia does the more western ones, and the ones in the middle are shared between the two countries. Similarly for their Rotary clubs.
Thanks, Anne, for the good advice and
Cheers to all.
