Jeff, thank you for offering to commemorate and use our park for
recognizing U.S. holidays. Thank you Jerry, Indegnous People's day was
added to the U.S. Holidays, you are correct. In some jurisdictions,
possibly CA or in San Francisco it has been replaced.
We are so fortunate to live in a place where the indigenous people still
live, and their cultural heritage is being recognized today. Unlike other
regions of American, the genocide of Native Americans by white settlers in
Mendocino County is quite recent, and we still are seeing the effects of
trauma in their communities. One of my good friends is a Pomo, and I have
been to a few of their Pinoleville big time celebrations in July. This
year, for the first time ever, Pomo language is being taught at the Ukiah
High School, and meets the A-G requirements for admission to college.
Their pre-schools in Ukiah have been teaching Pomo language to the children
for many years. From a public health perspective, I know that indigenous
people living in Mendocino county have the shortest life expectancy, and
more sickness and social problems, with poverty as the root cause. Bringing
their culture and history to the point of recognition is how we will
support the change that needs to happen, to help them rebuild a healthy
existence.
I am Italian American, and don't have any strong attachment to the Columbus
Day holiday, but for those who want to continue for sentimental and
cultural reasons that is your choice.
