[Rotary] Subject: Mendocino Community Foundation: Business Innovation and Resiliency Fund

Rotarians,
You will recall that Megan Allende of the Mendocino Community Foundation spoke at our club meeting of June 4, and described two funds designed to help in Covid-19 impact mitigation---the Covid 19 Relief Fund, targeting $400,000, and almost fully funded, and the Business Innovation and Resiliency Fund, to help small businesses retool their business processes using the web and various social media platforms working through the West Business Development Center, targeting $300,000, and only funded by something over $100,000 at present.
We asked if the Business Innovation and Resiliency Fund could provide support for Coronavirus PPE (plexiglass barriers, face shields, masks, gloves, non-contact thermometers, alcohol hand washes for staff and customers--think small restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, retail shops, BnBs, nail and hair dresser salons, etc) and she has responded "yes" per the below but they are seeking a commitment this week.   
I am not sure yet about scale but she talked about $5,000 per business in total so that means 60 businesses, for which Covid 19 equipment per the above except for plexiglass barriers would cost say  $100x60 or $6,000.
Nor am I sure about the business model they will be following. It looks to me as if a lot will go into advisory services, to help design websites etc, and I wonder how cost-effective the program will be.
She asked whether our funds, if granted, could be used throughout the county or only in the Mendocino area.
She asked that we respond this week so l hope we can  discuss at our meeting tomorrow.
Let's keep this amongst ourselves for now but anyone who has information that would be helpful please chime in.

 Jeff,
There was agreement that we could direct your gift to PPE. We can’t guarantee it will go to a specific business and think it is more likely that you would fund the PPE needs of multiple businesses given that we are anticipating that many folks will request PPE (and barriers etc.) as part of their $5000 request. Would that work for you? Also could it be throughout the county or does it just need to be in Mendocino? 
It was also agreed upon today that we are going to release all of the funding next week given the sense of urgency in the business community. That means that I must secure the final $12,000 this week. I hate to pressure you but it would be great to know if we can count on your Club for support. No need to provide all the needed funding. And, of course, you could send the check later in the month or in early July if you prefer.

It looks to me as if many of our small businesses will be reopening as we move through June, and they will indeed be inventing new ways of doing business and deserving of any help we can provide.
We are now having talks about our projects going forward, and I hope to have a lot of this in place by say end of June or maybe July.
