> The eradication of polio (POLIO PLUS) remains the # 1 priority of Rotary, our Rotary Foundation, and 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. It is a highly infectious and potentially deadly virus which was paralyzing over 350,000 children each year and killing in excess of 35,000 children and young adult  in over 125 countries way back in 1988 (the first year of our massive immunization campaigns). TODAY year to date in 2018 only 13 cases in 2 countries (Afghanistan (10) & Pakistan (3)).

Please share these with your members so they can better understand our long term commitment to saving children’s lives. Today we are closer than we have ever been in terms of the total eradication of the polio virus from our  planet.

> Again this year, the Gates Foundation will give a 2 for 1 dollar match which means that every $ 1 we raise for polio immunizations will become $ 3 when the Gates contribution is added to our total. Our Rotarians have always been very generous in terms of their contributions towards eradicating polio I’m sure it will continue this year.

Fortunately I had the care that enabled me to walk out of that last hospital at the age of 7. Children in 3rd world countries will never have that support.

> AFGHANISTAN  - one of only three countries in the world with ongoing wild poliovirus transmission. Our Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is focusing on reaching every last child with vaccines, financial resources and technical support at all levels. The number of cases in 2018 remains at 10 with the most recent case had onset of paralysis on June 22 in Kunar Province. This month we have scheduled national immunization activity which is ongoing. Cooperation between Afghanistan and Pakistan in terms of scheduling immunization campaigns remains positive. Also cross border teams work together to ensure that chronically missed children are immunized despite the deteriorating security situation throughout the country. Cross Border teams, permanent transit teams and special nomadic teams are successfully reaching children on the move.

> PAKISTAN – The number of cases in 2018 remains at 3. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on May 18. There has been a 97% reduction in cases since 2014. We are targeting 38.7 million children under the age of 5 in our August campaign.

> NIGERIA – Zero cases in last 2+ years. Immunizations continue in Nigeria with special emphasis on the Chad Lakes Area.
