Dear Rotarians,
Our club took action to approve an increase in our disaster aid budget at
last weeks Board meeting, based on club members wishes. We announced it it
at last weeks general meeting promptly after the Board meeting. We posed a
question to Bob about Shelter Box and designating specific hard hit regions
for ours to go. Please read his response below.
Thank you,
Donna

Dear Donna,

Severe storms, an earthquake, and hurricanes are wreaking havoc across the
globe from the United States and Mexico to South Asia and Africa. The
Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs in affected areas are helping bring
emergency aid to battered communities. Here's the latest recommendations
from RI on how we as Rotarians can help.

If you go to https://www.rotary.org/en/rotary-helps-disaster-victims
<http://ismyrotaryclub.org/Click/?id=994581&redirect=https://www.rotary.org/en/rotary-helps-disaster-victims>
you'll
see RI’s recommendations for donating to the Earthquake Victims in Mexico,
as well as the hurricane victims of Harvey and Irma. Although they mention
the Caribbean and Hurricane Maria, they do not specify a fund for that. If
they come out with a recommendation in the next couple of days concerning
Maria victims, I’ll forward it to you. My guess is that for now Shelterbox
would be the way to go for that disaster.

I was asked if you can designate a specific area or disaster for your
Shelterbox donation to go to, and here's what they say:

*In order for us to prepare for future disasters by positioning aid around
the world and to react quickly when disasters do take place, we are not
usually able to accept time or location-specific donations.*
*By giving ShelterBox a general donation, you are helping us use your money
to make the most difference to families in desperate need of shelter.*

So no, you cannot designate a specific area. But you can rest assured that
they send it where it is needed the most.

Hope this helps.

Yours in Service,

Bob
