As may recall, a few months ago we offered career advice to Heather and to anyone who is transitioning to a new career. We collected that wisdom (see attached), but we didn't collec the name of the Rotarian who offered it.
Dear Rotarians:
The following is a service project in which we hope you will participate.
Please look at the attached document, pick any and all career advice statements you want to contribute to, then with a few paragraphs or a few pages, flesh out your thoughts about why this advice is important and how it worked for you.
The goal is to create a small book of wisdom to guide career seekers and career transitioners (adults and high school students).
Example: Be persistent in your job search. Story: "When I was 14, living with my aunt in Dayton, Tennessee (pop. 2,500) for the summer, she said I needed to get a job at Shipley's Supermarket bagging groceries. I walked down to the store and asked about a job. Mr. Shipley said nothing was available and reported that to my aunt. Aunt Mildred, who had 9 children starting at age 14, told me that Mr. Shipley had a job but wanted to make sure that I really wanted it.
As a result, I visit the store and asked about a job 9 times before I was finally hired. That life lesson paid off in 1983 when McKesson Corp. (#4 on the Fortune 100 service companies) rejected my application as national PR manager. Since I knew I had the exact qualifications, I persisted and ultimately, got the job.
This is what I'm talking about: life lessons we all can share with others.
Please take a few minutes and share you secrets to a successful career.
Best Regards,
Bruce Lewis
