Welcome to the _LEDs Magazine_ HortiCann Light + Tech Newsletter for July
6, 2020. Here in the US, we are back at work after our Independence Day
holiday and a long weekend that generally features the summer’s bounty of
fresh produce alongside, of course, barbecued meats. I hope you readers in
other countries had a good weekend as well.
Here in San Diego, farmers’ markets are in the busiest part of their
season and doing quite well even with the coronavirus raging. Indeed, the
local markets outdoors seem to be about the safest place one can shop
right
now, and customers and vendors are universally practicing social
distancing.
But feeding the world going forward will require a new approach to growing
food. Indeed, we write about indoor and vertical farming quite a lot.
Still, when I learned about Germany-based Infarm, it struck me just how
varied the approaches are to indoor farms. Infarm is selling its farms or
growth chambers directly to grocery stores who place those farms right on
the grocery aisle [5].
It’s tough to get more locally grown than the Infarm approach as the
customers see the farm in action. It’s not a totally new concept to grow
produce on store premises. Several years ago, we covered Central Market in
Dallas, TX with a shipping container-based farm in the back lot [6]. But I
suspect shoppers will react positively to the Infarm approach. The company
is in the process of raising $200 million in C-round venture funding.
We also have a story for you about artificially-lit tomato greenhouses [7]
and the type of light that yields the tastiest tomatoes. I mentioned that
story last week in one of our News "> Are LED tomatoes as tasty as
HPS-grown? [11] One German grower says yes, they’re even tastier. But
the reason might surprise those familiar with typical taste metrics.
