Dear Ms. Courtney,

This is a continuation from the GuideStar article here:

http://trust.guidestar.org/blog/top-strategic-mistakes-nonprofits-make-part-1

The fourth one listed is 'Not paying for performance.' Look at KZYX's highest

paid executive, Ms. Courtney. In 2008, it was a 'Manager' named John Coate:

http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/680/680050440/680050440_200806_990.pdf<http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/680/680050440/680050440_200806_990.pdf>

Mr. Coate got paid $54,000 that year. His predecessor was Belinda Rawlins.

In 2007, she got paid $52,827 for being a 'General Manager':

http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/680/680050440/680050440_200706_990.pdf<http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/680/680050440/680050440_200706_990.pdf>

Ms. Rawlins was a short-timer. She came to that position in 2006. When KZYX's

net assets were $363,560. She burned through twenty grand of that money, and

somehow got it added to her paycheck. Nice. In 2005, KZYX had no manager at

all. And identical assets. So Ms. Rawlins wasn't actually performing at all.

But she got a big fat raise anyway. Ms. Rawlins was -- according to herself --

a rainmaker. In a Ukiah Daily Journal puff piece, Jane Futcher described Ms.

Rawlins as someone who 'reinvigorates' organizations:

http://www.ukiahdailyjournal.com/article/ZZ/20070131/NEWS/701319624

But all she seemed to reinvigorate at KZYX was her own paycheck. So KZYX

definitely paid for performance. i.e.; Ms. Rawlins' personal wealth.

Then we have John Coate. Who earned a whopping $200 a year before joining

'The Well' for $20,000 a year. As a marketing manager in a computer firm.

Who knew nothing about computers or marketing:

http://www.wired.com/1997/05/ff-well/

So he became an 'electronic counselor' of sorts. Until the wheels came

off at 'The Well'. The catalyst was a shit disturber who posted blogs

under the name of 'Mark Ethan Smith'. Smith turned out to be a woman with

an agenda. To put men like Mr. Coate in his place. Even identifying him

as a one of the 'Nazi penis worshipers' at 'The Well'. Forcing Mr. Coate

to spend thousands of hours dealing with 'Mark Ethan Smith'. Charging

'The Well' for each and every one of them. And finally burning out. Just

like 'The Well' did.

The Wired Magazine article that Mr. Coate brags about in his bio is a must

read for anyone connected with KZYX: http://www.wired.com/1997/05/ff-well/

It shows how 'The Well' spun off from 'The Farm'. And then onto KZYX. And

how eerily similar they all were. All of them 'Grateful Dead' worshippers.

To this very day, Mary Aigner -- aka Mary Prankster -- plays 'Grateful

Dead' concerts ad nauseum on KZYX:

https://spinitron.com/radio/playlist.php?station=kzyx&showid=73

Allowing Ms. Aigner to keep her finger on the pulse -- and her boot on the

neck -- of KZYX programming.

As Mr. Coate drained KZYX's bank account, Ms. Aigner kept the love flowing.

Resurrecting Gerry Garcia every week. Along with the money. Spellbound

Dead Head Directors never noticed. So they bought the narrative that KZYX

was thriving. When it was actually tanking. Just like it went down at 'The

Well'. With tie-dyed personnel groovin' to the vibe. Running the station

into the ground. Performance on acid.

By the time Mr. Coate split, $340,000 in net worth had disappeared. All

of it into Mr. Coate's pocket. And more. $54,000 times seven years equals

$378,000. Not including payroll taxes. To everyone's amazement, Mr. Coate

actually got a $20,000 raise for crashing KZYX. You can see that here:

http://www.kzyx.org/index.php/about-us/station-business/mcpb-bylaws-and-financial-statements

By 2013, Mr. Coate's salary had somehow been increased to $59,400. Which

is strange. Because he'd never been evaluated. Not according to Board

Meeting minutes here:

http://www.kzyx.org/index.php/about-us/station-business/meeting-minutes

'Not paying for performance' is one thing. Paying for bad performance

is the worst performance of all.

Sincerely,

Scott M. Peterson
