Great question David! When I was a teenager in Houston I loved Rice Universities radio station in large part because after 10pm they would really open it up and played all kinds of crazy music and comedy! Definitely making a statement about free speech rights. I think especially if KZYX want to generate more younger listeners, it could learn a lesson from this.

It would be interesting to note that the FCC has never shut down a radio station over a foul language complaint, even if the incident occurred during the day.

When I started at KZYX I was trained to ignore cuss words and told that the stations in house rules about them were fairly lax. I have found it interesting that staff has a tendency to become "puritanical" only when incidents occur during programs with hosts that have publicly advocated for membership control over the programming decision making process.

I have heard half a dozen cuss words on KZYX over the last two years occurring on programs who's hosts support the status quo with no disciplinary action taken.

This seems to be a pattern.

There was a lot of flack about the decision on Open Lines for weeks afterwards and I believe it was the cause of some of the downturn in membership the station has experienced over the last eight years.
