[Kzyxtalk] "Commercial Attitude" must be replaced

The Community Calendar already runs at specified times, weekday mornings and
evenings at 8:58am and 6:58pm, adjacent to news blocks.
Programmers can and do read PSAs and Public Affairs promos at their
discretion.
Prerecorded promos rotate mostly between 6:00am and 9:00am, and between
4:00pm and 7:00pm, i.e., before, during, and after the news blocks.
Public Affairs programmers can provide topic/guest specific promos at any
time by recording them at the studios, at home on a laptop or desktop
computer, or a good recording device, i.e., smart phone, digital recorder,
etc. Generally speaking the files are small enough to be emailed as MP3s to
Mary or Rich. It's a matter of programmers wishing to add this element to
their programming efforts.

Might I suggest:
. Promos for Public Affairs shows run before or after news
. Community Calendar at specified times (like during morning/evening
commutes, or after "news"?)
That way, those interested in such can dial in at those times.
Many include other PSA's
(announcing new music show, community fundraising events, etc.)
at the top/bottom of the hour w/station ID.
They're always more fun to listen to when paired w/interesting background
music.
Creating a 30-60 sec. PSA is a good way to involve community volunteers,
as well as current programmers . . .
Often, the folks putting on the event are interested in learning . . .
and their enthusiasm is heard in their voice, catching the listener's
attention.
Not hard to do w/a free piece of shareware called "Audacity".
Back in the day, PSA's were saved on "carts" - just jam it into the player,
and push the button.
(But they had to be produced in-the-station = "staff time")
Now, they can be created on a laptop, saved as MP3s,
e-mailed to the station, and added to playlist.
A case of technology allowing access, rather than limiting it.
Some stations let community know of fixed times
that PSA's of an emergency nature (fire updates, alerts, etc.)
will be played. That way, if something's happening
folks know to dial in at, say, 11AM and 3PM for
the latest info.
Ever a fan of systems that work,
~C.

As a forever radio person (many years in commercial radio), I disagree that
promos for upcoming shows should be no-no's. They give the bigger picture.
However, it would be better if they were less random/more timely/more
relevant to the show on air/more equally aired, & ran in the breaks rather
than interrupting programming (if they do. I haven't heard such).
Fine-tuning promo placment would be one more task for staff, who will
hopefully be more aware.
Personally, I'd prefer to hear the Community Calendar re-run less often, or
in several versions announcing different events, but this would involve more
volunteer time & commitment.

yes! i agree with this assessment. One of the worst things is how they
play spot ads all the time.
and we have heard them many times. and they are for some program a week
from now, a program that is on every week at that time...with no regard for
what they are interrupting!
it is tactless.
too much self promotion, playing to the current listeners
and driving us to turn it off...

One clarifying example of "commercial attitude" is the constant promotion of
programs in the future - as much as a week aheadl The affect on me and
others is to distract and break the train of thought from what the program
is (mood) creating - like the commercials commercially. IMO individuals
respond with frustration about their mental/emotional state being
disturbed/violated senselessly. ~BC

You say "local programming content is superb but is being diminished by a
commercial attitude." That rings true to me. And your definition of the term
(below) is clear enough.
The "commercial attitude" must be replaced by another that "facilitates
community development in spirit and practice" That also rings true but I
would like to hear more, so please expand on that. I have heard similar
things from others who were around the station in its early days.
And you note "we have a lot of discovery coming up in the near future." Yes,
I agree again. Everything indicates that we are on the brink of change, of
great change and we need a place, a local place, to talk about it as it
happens. As you say "KZYX is perhaps the most critical platform for that
evolutionary exploration." That is a big compliment and a huge
responsibility.
Do others on this list have similar feelings about the "commercial attitude"
and what should replace it?
