Please see link below. I am ashamed to see this op-ed in yesterday's Ukiah Daily Journal
http://www.ukiahdailyjournal.com/letterstotheeditor/ci_26097092/some-questions-kzyx-board
I guess I'm most ashamed to be on a board of directors of a public radio station that was given the opportunity to investigate an incident where a male employee of the station spit at a woman in the station's parking lot, but the board refused to investigate.
For the record, I gave each and every KZYX Board member Ms. Massey's contact information, but Ms. Massey has yet to receive a single phone call from any KZYX Board member.
I was aghast when KZYX Board Chair Herring casually dismissed the incident as a "he said-she said thing." Aghast. This incident isn't a "he said-she said thing." I witnessed the incident. Regardless, it needs to be investigated, if Ms. Massey said it happened. I guess under Chair Herring's logic many, if not most, rape cases would never be investigated, because many, if not most, rape cases are crimes that involve some element of "he said-she said."
Another thing: The credibility of Ms. Massey is unimpeachable. She is an artist with a national reputation. She is a a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America and Audubon Artists by juried review. Also, earlier in her life, Ms. Massey had been on the salaried staff of a public radio station in a major metropolitan market. She worked at Nashville Public Radio, WPLN. In other words, she knows how a public radio station should operate.
At tonight's Board meeting, I will be bringing up the incident. I will not be mentioning the perpetrator who spit at Ms. Massey by name.
Also for the record, M. Kathryn Massey is one of the people of Mendocino County who informally objected at the FCC to the renewal of the station's two licenses, pending a change in management at the station.
Finally for the record, one of KZYX's programmers, Jeff Blankfort, recently wrote a letter -- published by the AVA -- in which Blankford said he could "understand" why someone who works at KZYX would want to spit at Ms. Massey.
I quote from Blankfort's letter, "I cannot vouch for what did or did not happen but, frankly, if it did, as she [Ms. Massey] claims, I could understand it."
This is also truly shocking.
Tonight, Monday, July 7, the KZYX Board meets at the Willits Library at 390 East Commercial Street at 6:00 p.m. I urge the public to attend the meeting. Please make your views known that misogyny will not be tolerated at KZYX.
There will be an opportunity at the meeting for public comment.
