Doug,
John Coate and his crew aren't interested in "open lines".
You know that. Otherwise, your show, "Open Lines" would be back on the air with you hosting it. Instead, we have "The Discussion" on Thursday night with W Dan Houck.
W Dan? Host of "The Treehouse"?
Yes. The one and the same W Dan. He got the show because he is a Coate loyalist, a KZYX company man.
But this is a new low for the station. W Dan is banal at best. He is often vulgar, obscene. At worst, he's boring, unfunny, arrogant. W Dan is to public affairs radio what Corn Nuts, Slim Jims, and other bar food is to a healthy diet.
Why put this new abomination of a show on the air, instead of having you return to the air, Doug? Because Coate and his crew have a bunker mentality. A siege mentality. Open and free media isn't what KZYX is about. It's about being a closed clubhouse. It's about being a jobs program for the four or five people who "work" at the station (I use the word loosely.)). It's about being a jobs program without accountability or transparency, and even without much productivity.
It was so refreshing on my June 27 show to hear former FCC Chair, Michael Coggs, along with Norman Solomon, and State Department whistleblower, Peter van Buren, talk about a free and open media.
I finished my show, went outside to my car in the parking lot, and cried. Really, I cried. It felt so good for to hear the idea of an open and free media be validated by my guests. Incidentally, FCC Chair Coggs's call was unexpected. He totally surprised me. I think Coggs heard my June 13 show when former FCC Commissioner Nick Johnson was my guest.

I want public radio back here in Mendocino County, Doug. How do we do that? I filed complaints with the FCC and CPB, and I fight as the lone dissenting voice on the KZYX Board. But I'm hated by many programmers for speaking out. They fear Coate and Aigner. They fear losing their shows, just as you did.
But people vote with their dollars. The Spring Pledge Drive was a bust. The goal was $85,000, but Coate raised only $62,000. It seems apparent to me that Coate would rather destroy KZYX than open it up to the people.
Best always, my friend,
John

All of this represents a level of dysfunction at KZYX that has come to surprise even me. How hard is it to arrange an open lines call in show for the CAB or the Board so the membership can call in and talk? This is what healthy radio stations do. This CAB teleconference "meeting" is just another pretense at "community input" while really only operating a a medium to censor the publics ideas in order to limit criticism from those who disagree with staff. I am reminded of the way they would not allow open lines questions during the board debate, choosing instead to take questions beforehand and then only asking those questions vetted by staff. All of this is absurd. I mean really rediculous. It would be hilarious if it was not so sad to watch such a valuable community resource under the control of a few people incapable of sharing what is rightfully ours.

With the exceptions of a few programs KZYX will die of boredom.
I'm trying to get back in but am not allowed. Talk about control.
My suggestion is that ALL kzyxtalk missives be copied to John Coate.
The future of the station is in jeopardy.
Interesting to listen to the whining of CAB members talking
about have to drive a few miles. They might try being a programmer.
With no thank you to those who, for some reason, listened.

7:04 : Only five people have signed on to the call.
And --- there is a five second time delay. The host
can omit calls.
Steve "Phish" is chairing the meeting.
