In the midst of all the chaos, we hope you’ve been able to get out and enjoy Jackson Demonstration State Forest, or your public lands wherever you reside.

At Jackson, timber harvest plans are back in full swing.  The AMEX Timber Harvest Plan (THP) is in its final stages of approval. We’ll share tips for you to comment in an upcoming email, but for now, we have a more urgent matter. The Camp 8 South THP is being presented to the Jackson Advisory Group (JAG) next Tuesday, and the JAG needs to hear from you by Friday, June 20th.

The Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC) describes the Camp 8 South project like this:

I have spent many hours traversing these hillsides, picking black trumpet mushrooms, admiring giant old growth redwoods in the Standing Bear (aka Pentagon) Grove, sitting at the base of little waterfalls, but mostly trying not to damage the extremely friable and nearly vertical forest floor with my boots, trying not to injure myself on these treacherous slopes in such a remote and inaccessible location.  I have spent the night at Camp 8, with a mountain lion screeching in the night and a bear padding through the dawn, heard Pileated Woodpeckers pounding hollow snags, and even had an encounter with a Northern Spotted Owl in 2021.  This is an exceptional spot, rightly designated Late Seral Development, and truly inappropriate for mechanized human intrusion.
