In the early 2000’s, I had the privilege of studying with a number of
brilliant visionary philosophers in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and
Consciousness program at the California Institute of Integral Studies in
San Francisco.



One of them was David Ulansey, a philosopher of religion known for his work
on ancient mystery traditions and the evolution of religious consciousness.



One of Ulansey’s most profound contributions was the insight that the
Ancient Greek Mysteries — such as the Eleusinian and Orphic rites — were
not merely religious ceremonies but initiatory processes designed to bring
participants into direct, personal experience of their own soul.



He argued that the pivotal shift of that era was from communal or tribal
identity to individual self-awareness. The ritual processes of the ancient
mysteries were intended to evoke direct knowledge of the self, serving
as practical
initiations into individuation.



That shift, Ulansey claimed, helped birth the inner life and personal
subjectivity that underpins much of Western psychological identity today.



Today we are living through another inflection point in the evolution of
consciousness.



What is the pivotal shift being called forth in human awareness in our
times?



I believe German philosopher Jean Gebser offers a compelling answer.



Gebser saw the crisis of the modern world as preparing the ground for a
fundamental mutation toward integral consciousness — a state in which the
healthy dimensions of all previous stages of consciousness (archaic,
mythic, magical, and mental-rational) are reclaimed and integrated into a
new, coherent wholeness.



But what does it really mean to recover mythic awareness?



I don’t think many of us have grasped yet just how radical this shift might
be.



We are reaching back and forward in time to (re)-awaken a sense of
ourselves as mythic beings.



For this we need new initiatory rites — designed to bring us into conscious
contact with the archetypal dimension of the soul.



Astrology is the discipline par excellence for understanding our personal
mythic journey.



And ritualized group consciousness is the vessel for activating and
stabilizing our mythic self-awareness at an entirely new level.
