Subject: What's deal with State requirement for seismic compliance for our coast hospital??
Importance: High

All,
seems I’m also doing publicity these days for the Mendocino Coast Health Care District. You have probably heard some of the discussion in the community about the state law requiring our coast hospital to complete seismic retrofit by year 2030. Some ask - is this true? is it necessary? What is the cost? What does this mean for our community? well, tune in to the MCHCD Board meeting next week, 6pm, May 23 to hear what Carl Scheuerman, Senior Policy Advisor, HCAI (California Department of Health Care & Information) has to say about this. We could continue to spend our time in rumor, but I think most of us would like to know some facts about the situation and the state requirement. The Zoom link will be available with the May 23 agenda usually 72 in advance of the Board meeting - https://www.mchcd.org <https://www.mchcd.org/>

I’ve also attached below a recently published information piece from MCHCD.
Cheers, Anna Garza

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 10, 2024
Coast Health Care District to Hear from State Experts
on Seismic Compliance
The Mendocino Coast Health Care District Board announces that Carl Scheuerman, Senior Policy Advisor, HCAI (California Department of Health Care & Information), will speak on our community hospital's retrofit requirements at the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, May 23. Mr. Scheuerman will also address the timelines for the hospital's seismic compliance. The public is encouraged to attend and hear this presentation. This meeting is held in the Redwood Room at the Mendocino Coast Community Hospital (in the Physical Therapy building). The May 23 agenda and attachments can be found at https://www.mchcd.org/board-meetings The Zoom link will be available with the posted agenda.
Background: on January 17, 1994, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Northridge, California, resulting in thousands of casualties and approximately $60 billion in damages and economic loss. Hospitals within the impacted area suffered severe structural damage and many became inoperable. Recognizing the insufficiency of the existing seismic safety standards for hospitals, the state of California signed Senate Bill 1953 (SB 1953, the Alfred E. Alquist Hospital Facilities Seismic Safety Act) into law in September 1994. This law requires, by January 2030, owners of all acute care inpatient hospitals to either seismically retrofit all acute care inpatient hospitals, or demolish, replace, or change to non-acute care use all hospital buildings not in substantial compliance with regulations and standards in accordance with the act.
Getting all California hospitals across the finish line will not be an easy task. The financial hurdles are particularly challenging for smaller and rural hospitals. The MCHCD board is currently reviewing all aspects of this critical issue.
