I wrote this poem quite a few years ago to Ron and Toni for providing
Spirit House for the community and thought I would share it again in
tandem with the Equinox invitation.

Spirit House

There are no maps to guide us on this journey
beyond the words
trust in the earth

At night in the Spirit House
our ancestors gather around us
I wear a bracelet of 54 prayer beads
I whisper the prayers to greet our dead

for the soul is a wanderer
with many hands and feet

I feel my heart open to the figure
of a girl somewhere in the field of my past
She carries my Grandmother's face
hidden behind her eyes
so in this way she completes a circle
of all our people
opening like wings on either side of her

At night in the Spirit House they come with prayer shawls
and beads to break bread with the living
There are no guide posts for this kind of journey
beyond opening ourselves to the power of the universe

I sing the names of our dead
count the prayers wrapped around my wrist
watch the small circle of stars tremble a reflection
of all our faces
in the sacred circle
floating just above our heads.
