Mendocino Sister Cities Association presents “Friendship between Two Towns – Art and Culture Exchange.”

Mendocino Sister Cities Association (MSCA) started the Art Exchange Program in 2008. Since then, the artists from both sides of the Pacific Ocean have deepened their friendships through visits and their art, and we are striving.

The 18th Mendocino Sister City International Art Exhibition is a Joint Show at the Mendocino Art Center, featuring five Miasa-Omachi Artists and fourteen Coast Artists in various media:  Glass Art, Ceramics, Painting, Fiber Art, Photography, and Mixed Media.  Additionally, Tea Ceremony demonstration and Japanese Dance (Nihonbuyou) are planned at the opening reception.

As our heartfelt welcome, the Genryu Miasa Taiko group will perform to open the event. The seven members are excited to be in Mendocino for this opportunity.  Taiko are a broad type of Japanese percussion instruments, and they are played with the sticks called bachi to create a deep, intense, and rich sound.  Recent studies show that taiko drumming has a wide range of health benefits, such as improving mobility, reducing stress, boosting mood, and more.  Taiko is a key component of Japanese festivals, so let us celebrate this wonderful time together!

While you are enjoying the art, culture, and taiko, you also can experience the taste of Japan with sake, Japanese rice wine.  This fundraising activity is made possible by Mendocino College Ceramics Department for studio support as well as the artists who donated their talents and time.  There will be plenty of “one of a kind” handmade sake cups awaiting you to choose.  Each cup costs $20 with three tickets, which helps Miasa-Omachi artists and MSCA.  Why not three, four or more cups to take home with you?

Please join us.  Immerse yourself in this unique cultural evening.
