Ungrateful for Gravity

 

It’s so easy.

All she has to do is feel the ground purring

under her feet,

savor the stretching of wings

on wind,

hear the hawk's cry

on the other side of the sky,

all she has to do is stand

between the sky's lid and the earth's belly

in the enfolding of a great cosmic bear

all knowing and benevolent.

 

All she has to do is

withdraw the bottom of her feet

from the earth's tyranny,

resist the mighty pull,

use the inaudible sound

as a vehicle of escape

from the magnetic bondage.

 

All she has to do is

let the warmth enter through her toes,

go up her legs and quiver in her belly,

delivering her body

from the ancestral spell,

from the naming that gave it form and weight

and kept it there.

 

All she has to do is

stay clear of history

and she’ll be free to answer

the call of galaxies,

free from the hypnotic agreement

to solidity.

 

All she has to do is

stand alone,

stand straight,

stand up for herself,

break loose,

breathe in the song unsung

let it find her vulnerable parts.

 

All she has to do is

ignite the explosion that unteaches her cells,

discharge her image,

disperse family fragments,

and loosen the hold

her abstracted brain has on everything.

 

Only then

will she unlearn the knowledge

that obscured her ascent,

and allow the knowing

so long forgotten

            to take her into flight.
