Bonfires on the Beach
2022-2023

Contemplating the fire
on the last day of the Old year
I behold the burning inside the fearful
suffering mind,
the flame of generations
that created fear, pain and anger.

I witness the blaze of invention
birthing worlds with love
and destroying them with greed;
that violent fire suffocating our time.

Smoke smothers me,
tears run down
and on the first day of the New year
my eyes go silent.

I begin a slow pensive ascent
into a continuous coming into being,
the word of Love suddenly plain
for me to see
in the fire
and in everything around me.

Each creation I behold
spells a divine word,
words are strung into sentences
sentences into scripts
proclaiming the joy of being,
the joy of knowing
that to be is
sacred
to live is
holy.

I behold
that indigenous fire ignited
over and over
illuminating the faces of
mother and father
sister and brother
with love
and the immense energies
of the universe
whisper of a future
that heals the past.

The fire slowly burns down
as I fall into dormancy.

I become ember
I become ash
I disappear into a dream
that has no beginning
no end.

All of what I am
is a blessing.
