Hello Thais,

What happened last week in the Faroe Islands, where a group of hunters slaughtered an entire super pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins, is unforgivable. Not only is the meat so polluted as to be unfit for human consumption, but there is also no justification under any definition of "sustainability" or "subsistence" that makes the inhumane massacre of over 1,400 animals, including mothers and calves, either legal or moral. We must be willing to defy the status quo, and hold the leaders willing to endanger the well-being of our shared ecosystem accountable.

I have spent enough time in remote communities around the world to understand that subsistence hunting is not just an important part of survival, it is also tied to cultural identity, spirituality and community. As we continue to support the rights and needs of remote communities to make a living from the ocean, we must also remember that as our most important ally in the fight against climate change, a living ocean plays a critical role in moderating the worst effects of climate disruption. Importantly, it can only do this if it is indeed a living ecosystem.

For many years the international community has stood in silence as an ever-shrinking handful of Faroese hunters carry out their annual subsistence hunt. But what happened last week was not a hunt; it was a mass killing, and it needs to be challenged and condemned in a serious way. More and more people are standing up against the abuse of trust by those who claim to be hunting for food but who have disrespected the integrity of the marine ecosystems that sustain us all. For the health of people and the ocean, it is time for this to stop.
