The Poet’s Lament - Up Fisher Point, Utah
>
> I extract words from the lichen growing on boulders,
> I rob the wind’s breath for inspiration,
> I arrest the hawk’s flight to drink the juice of power,
> I plagiarize the twisted shapes of pinion pines
> to form sentences.
> I am poet,
> the thief of what was given for free
> on filaments of love.
>
> The modern bard burglarizes;
> broken is the connecting thread
> between word and soul;
> having avoided the dark places of wisdom
> the images within a song
> are dull,
> empty sounds. . .
>
> But the forgotten pictures
> still attempt to knock on the poet’s door,
> to seize the imagination,
> annihilate the individual
> merge the lovers,
> and meet the one who dares to jump
> straight into the fire
> to die and resurrect.
>
> An alchemical transformation.
>
> Now the new language makers,
> extracting words from within the color of lichen,
> endeavor to retrieve the lost soul
> and project behind each sound
> the eternal truth of who we all are.
>
> My words only become true
> when you
> who listen
> put them in my mouth.
