Very few in our region understand forest policy - State and Federal.

This article is about Federal Policy - which is expected to continue -
due to dedicated infrastructure funding for fuels management and just
general management.

The coastal forests (our region) has limited federal lands that will be
effected. One one ongoing debate is with the management of old growth
forests and related protections. The debate is a misnomer - as the
debate should be around management for development of old growth type
(most old growth is now gone) forest inventories. This means saving a
significant number of larger (dominant) trees that can develop in old
growth type trees - with are much more fire resilient and efficient in
the carbon cycle. Overall forest health on, both, Federal and State
private (industrial and smaller landowners ) would look like a mix of
all age classes - that are well spaced - with an emphasis on development
of larger, old growth type, trees. Just focusing on old growth (since
most of it is gone) is counter productive.

There are 32 million acres of forestland in California

17 million are federal lands, approx 12 million are private lands (2.4
million industrial), the rest are State forests or preserves.
