Governor Newsom Signs Executive Order to Conserve Biodiversity, Combat Climate Change,
and Build Climate Resilience Through Nature-Based Solutions
Today, Governor Newsom signed an Executive Order to combat the biodiversity and climate change crises in California using nature-based solutions. Notably, the Executive Order will establish a state goal to conserve at least 30% of California’s land and coastal waters by 2030, launch the California Biodiversity Collaborative, and elevate the role of natural and working lands as a pillar of California’s climate change strategy. This bold announcement, which highlights the role of California Native American tribes as critical partners, will further catalyze action to protect California’s coastal and ocean ecosystems and help achieve the goals of the Strategic Plan to Protect California’s Coast and Ocean. <https://opc.ca.gov/webmaster/ftp/pdf/agenda_items/20200226/OPC-2020-2025-Strategic-Plan-FINAL-20200228.pdf>
The full text of the Executive Order can be read here <https://www.gov.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/10.07.2020-EO-N-82-20-signed.pdf>.
California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot, California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross, California Secretary for Environmental Protection Jared Blumenfeld, and the Office of Planning and Research Director Kate Gordon will host an environmental stakeholder call at 3pm today to discuss Governor Newsom’s Executive Order.
