The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), Sonoma-Lake-Napa
Unit plans to conduct a prescribed burn along the east ridge of The Jenner
Headlands Preserve on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. The Preserve is owned and
managed by The Wildlands Conservancy, and is located just north of the
Russian River Estuary near the towns of Jenner and Duncans Mills. The
anticipated time for the prescribed burn is between the hours of 10:00am
and 4:00pm.

The prescribed burn will occur within a Shaded Fuel Break established by
The Wildlands Conservancy from 2013-2016. The Shaded Fuel Break is
designed to reduce ground fuels and ladder fuels while maintaining adequate
canopy structure to provide shade and wildlife habitat. Shaded Fuel Breaks
also provide access to fire fighters to initiate fire suppression
activities in the event of an uncontrolled wildfire. The prescribed burn
will maintain the effectiveness of the Shaded Fuel Break by consuming
residual ground fuels with a low-intensity fire.

Prescribed vegetation management burns are carefully planned and must meet
strict criteria for ecological benefit, weather parameters, smoke
management, and fire safety guidelines. When all conditions are met,
trained wildland firefighters conduct the burn, while monitoring the set
criteria, fire behavior, and designated fire control lines. The prescribed
burn will comply with requirements of the Northern Sonoma County Air
Pollution Control District; the District can be contacted at (707) 433-5911.

By implementing projects like this, we hope to greatly improve the forest’s
health and resiliency to potentially catastrophic, uncontrolled wildfires
and help protect surrounding communities from the effects of devastating
wildfires.

Sincerely,

The Wildlands Conservancy
