Marijuana Town Hall Meetings & Community Survey

The County of Sonoma will be holding a series of town hall meetings and conducting an online survey to receive input on marijuana regulation in unincorporated Sonoma County. Led by the Medical Marijuana Ad Hoc Committee of Supervisors Efren Carrillo and Susan Gorin, the County is currently in the process of developing ordinances and policies to create a comprehensive regulatory scheme for the marijuana industry.

“Defining the structure and regulatory aspect of the commercial marijuana industry in Sonoma County comes with complex issues along with many opportunities and challenges,” said Supervisor Carrillo. “We know this growing industry will have a big impact on our County and encourage all stakeholders to participate in shaping the County’s approach.”

The town hall meetings will consist of a brief presentation on the status of the regulatory process. The majority of the meetings will provide an opportunity for attendees to provide feedback and ask questions on key issue areas. Representatives from a number of County departments will be available to discuss the marijuana industry as it relates to agriculture and the environment, health and human services, taxation and revenue, economic development, and enforcement.

In the Mark West Watershed (and other critical watersheds), where summer and fall stream flow is already threatened by domestic and vineyard/winery water use, large scale cannabis production could be the final stressor that kills any hope of coho recovery. Is the County looking at these developments from a water supply standpoint? Should we be seeking overlay zoning that would prohibit commercial scale cannabis production in critical watersheds? Been out of the loop and wondered what's up. Thanks, Ray
