Here in the last 40 days of his Presidency, Barak Obama has the opportunity to "lock in" a real plan to stop global warming before Donald Trump is inaugurated.  President Obama can agree to settle the Juliana v United States lawsuit by committing the government to a comprehensive plan for restricting greenhouse gasses.  We must urge him to take this critically important step.

In the Juliana case, twenty-one young Americans are suing the US government for denying their right to a safe future by encouraging fossil fuel production, even though the government has known for 50 years that this causes dangerous climate change.

On November 10, US District Court Judge Ann Aiken ordered the historic Juliana suit to proceed to trial.  Rather than continue to oppose the lawsuit alongside lawyers for the fossil fuel industry, President Obama must use this precious chance before he steps down to settle the suit by agreeing to commit the United States to a comprehensive plan restricting greenhouse gasses.  Compliance with this agreement would be overseen by the federal judiciary, not the Trump Administration.

Obama was the first US President to create an official "We The People" website through which Americans may officially petition their government.  There is now a We The People petition calling upon the President to settle the Juliana lawsuit by committing our nation to restrict greenhouse gas emissions.  The White House guarantees a response to We The People petitions which receive 100,000 signatures within 30 days of filing.  This petition must meet that threshold by December 29th of this year.
