Our guest speaker Tobin is a top quality person that would make an
excellent Rotarian-- and at the moment he is just too busy as principal,
parent, and having been principal during the pandemic and a 3 year
reconstruction of the high school campus. But, let's give him a warm
reception and invitation to collaborate more on community projects. I
found a Beacon article from 2016, when he was about to start as principal.
Consider bringing a guest.
Tobin Hahn, a graduate of Mendocino High School and current science teacher
there, has been selected to take over as high school principal for Gail
Dickenson, who is retiring at the end of this year.
Hahn graduated from Mendocino High School in 1990, then spent four years
studying ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University.
After graduating from Princeton, he moved to Santa Cruz and worked as a
substitute teacher — a job well suited to supporting his then surfing habit.
In 1994, Hahn moved back to Mendocino after accepting a teaching position
at the middle school. He worked there for four years before moving to the
high school.
“I never set out to be a teacher, then work my way into administration. For
the last eight to ten years I just haven’t been able to resist working on
the bigger picture of the school. I love what I do in my classroom, but
whenever there is something that needs to be done school-wide, I can’t help
but jump into it, and I think a lot about it,” said Hahn.
Over the years, Hahn has taken on more leadership roles. The biggest has
been coordinating the last three cycles of the Western Association of
Schools and Colleges accreditation process, which is an ongoing six-year
self-study of the school.
“I was the one who made sure everyone got it done on time, and compiled the
reports. For a year and a half, I led all the stakeholder students, staff,
and parents through the process of reflection and gathering information and
making sure we were focused on determining our critical needs,” explained
Hahn.
“I think my motivation for doing it, is that process of reflection and
improvement. It is exciting for me to look at what we can do better and how
we can function better together as a team,” said Hahn.
Hahn has also been spearheading the Beginning Teacher Support and
Assessment program, which focuses on professional development and
instructional strategies for new teachers.
In his new position as principal, Hahn hopes to concentrate on implementing
the four areas of focus identified from the accreditation process.
The areas include creating a positive school culture, providing academic
intervention for students, continuing to offer relevant programs, and an
over-arching focus on improved communication.
“I think for me all those things we need to do are going to require some
change, and it has to be change that is grown, not imposed. So my goal is,
first and foremost, to create a culture that is open to and embraces that
type of change and growth. One where we are able to look critically, but
also be supportive and celebrate what we do well.”
By creating this culture of growth, Hahn hopes to release the full creative
potential of everybody at the school.
“Once you have that culture of growth and change, your creative programs
and solutions start to come. Our student population and our staff have a
lot of potential, a lot of creativity. Allowing them to release this is my
goal.”
Hahn is open to the path the school will take to meet these needs, but
having a vision will help provide a focus and goal, he said.
“Imagine a river here and it is going to flow to the ocean. That is your
vision and your purpose pulling you, and maybe something could change its
course, but it is still being drawn. For me, my goal as a leader is to
provide that gravity. To say, ‘Hey we are going in this direction and yeah
we are going to do some meandering and the course the river charts I can’t
predict, but I know we are going in this direction. That enables you to
have things happen that you haven’t thought of. Maybe the solution for that
time and that group of students is something unthought-of and you have to
be open to that,” said Hahn.
Hahn will be starting his new position as principal on July 1.
