Hi everyone,
My efforts are finally paying off and I have great news to share... I left
my county health department job and am starting a new job with the
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) next week! I'll be working
from my home office M-F, 8-5:00, and occasionally in the Richmond CA
office.
I'll be working in the Genetic Disease Screening Program for newborns as a
liaison to special care. You've likely heard of sickle cell and cystic
fibrosis diseases, but there are more than 80 congenital or genetic
conditions that infants are tested for shortly after birth, many of which
are treatable.
CDPH runs the largest screening program in the world and set the standard
in delivering high-quality, cost-effective genetic services to all
Californians. The mission of the Genetic Disease Screening Program (GDSP)
is "To serve the people of California by reducing the emotional and
financial burden of disability and death caused by genetic and congenital
disorders."
*Youth news:*
- At scholarship awards night last Weds, Toby presented two $2,500
scholarships to Bella Horne, who is headed to Cal Maritime Academy, and to
Rosa Ramirez, who is off to college in Florida for Aeronautical
engineering. Both Bella and Rosa were Interact club officers, had excellent
academic records, and reputations for leadership and volunteerism.
- 3 Interact club students are headed to the Rotary Youth Leadership
Academy (RYLA- "camp") at Westminster Woods in Sonoma County on Sunday.
- Toby and I attended the final Interact meeting of the school year on
Wednesday and placed cords on the seniors, shook hands and thanked them for
their service. The new club officers were announced, and every slice of
pizza Toby brought was polished off.
- 4th of July. Let me know what jobs and for how long, and I'll ask the
Interact club for volunteers. I need to ask them ASAP as graduation is next
week. They might sell popsicles for their own fundraiser during the parade.
Warm regards,
Donna
