The meeting was called to order by President Toby, who welcomed the Mendocino High School Interact Club after which we conducted the pledge, did the pin check, asked for happy dollars and did the orther formalities. This was a very well-attended meeting with attendees including the Interact Club members and Advisor Pam Duncan, and Rotarians including Ray Alarcon, Margaret Black, Gary Hopper, Pam Hudson, Jerry Karabensh, Susan Keller, Donna Schuler, Jeffry Stubbs, Toby Wade, Michael Brown and Trevor Kuchar (11 Rotarians, and even more Interact Club members).
The Interact Club President, Rosa, took the chair and we talked about things the Club had done that they particularly liked as well as what they might be doing in the year ahead, including projects they might do with Rotary. Two persons who had been to RYLA spoke highly of their experience and encouraged others to attend it in the coming year. There was talk of a blood drive and possibly doing an adoption day for dogs and other animals. Jeff introduced the possibility of a Mendocino-Big River triathon, run, bicycle ride or walk, beginning on Big River and ending up at Rotary Park, and asked the students what they thought of such an idea. A lively discussion followed, from which it appeared that there might be a lot of interest in such an event. We talked about timing, and it seemed that August/September, when the water would be warmer, would be the best time for an event with a swimming leg, whereas running and bicycle riding could be done in Spring, Summer or Fall. We talked about sponsorship and concluded it might be done by Rotary and the School, or Rotary, State Parks and school clubs. This would be a big event, on the order of the Ukraine Day event, with many participants and it would take a lot of preparation. Jeff volunteered to research it further, and report back to the club. A very early description of the event was passed out, and is attached to this e-mail.
Donna, who had organized the meeting, helped moderate the talks, particularly on RYLA and shared events, and provided pizza which was enjoyed by all.
We concluded with the drawing and raffle, and guess what? Margaret drew the joker.
We collected $216 in cash and checks on the day. The drawing pool at the beginning of the day stood at $393, of which half, or $196.50, would go to Margaret. The other half, or $196.50, would be kept by the Club.
The drawing pool would stand at $78 for the next regular meeting which will be on February 15.
