Good morning Jerry, Susan, et al,
I sent an email and this survey below out early in January and received two
responses. I sent as an attachment, so now I am embedding it in the email
which I hope will help all to respond. The two of you who responded, thank
you, I have your responses.
This is a very challenging time for me- work, grad school, Rotary are all
demanding more time that I can give- and I have family and health to take
care of too.
*UPDATES*- Dictionaries are arriving next week at North state street, and I
dont have the specifics yet. If I cannot pickup, I need an alternate. It
will be about five boxes, not too large, but heavy.
*Toby may be going to the Interact meeting today*, and needs to check in
the office before going.
*I modified our scholarship application and coordinated with the high
school.*
*Dictionaries need a lead other than me for contacting school.*
I will not be attending today, and this is my summary before work.

*Mendocino Rotary ClubYouth Services*
Youth services are coordinated in Rotary clubs by a youth services chair
and members who
serve on the youth services committee. The chair needs committee members to
take the lead
on programs, and not all who serve on the youth service committee do the
same thing. I will
provide training for the four Rotarian leads below for 2023-2024. You are
valued and respected
for any service commitment you can give. Did I say it is fun to see what is
up with kids in our
area and witness the development of the next leaders? Our experience in
Rotary is richer
because of the relationships we form, and having connections to schools and
youth is never dull.
Here is the lineup of youth services, a brief summary of what the
objectives are, and the
general steps involved.
I. *Dictionaries* - need a lead Rotarian (the youth services chair is not
supposed to do
everything)
Objective: Promoting literacy and education is a long standing tradition of
Rotary, and each
year we present a beautiful dictionary with a personalized bookplate to
each third grade
student in Mendocino Unified School District. The kids are so excited to
get these books. Not all
students come from homes with books in them.
Time commitment and steps involved:
Email Mendocino school K8 office in early August to get students names
and head
count.
Email District dictionaries chair with number of dictionaries and
bookplates needed
(place order).
Email invoice from District chair to our treasurer for payment
Arrange for pickup of dictionaries (Ukiah has drop site, generally)
Personalize book plate (roughly 35-40 dictionaries)
Contact K8 office to schedule date to present dictionaries. Invite
Rotarians to present (3-
5 Rotarians - less for Albion and Comptche where we’ll have 1-2 students).
Go to all three schools, Mendocino, Albion and Comptche to present
dictionaries with a
small group of Rotarians (typically between November and January pre
pandemic).
Take photos and submit to local newspaper
II. *Interact Club* - need a lead Rotarian
Objective: This is a youth leadership development and service club. Ours is
one of thousands
around the globe. Think of it as a junior Rotary Club. These students get
skills by holding regular
meetings to plan service projects, by meeting other Interact club members
in the district, going
to district leadership conference, and attending the week long Rotary Youth
Leadership Camp
(RYLA) in June. We sponsor the club by paying a small Interact teacher-
advisor stipend, send a
few incoming or potential club officers to RYLA camp, and sponsor other
students to the
leadership conference. Interactors are invited to join us on service
projects or invite us to
support theirs. The pandemic curtailed most activities and the club is
working for meaningful
projects with outcomes.
Time commitment and steps involved:
Email teacher advisor at Mendocino High early August to find out meeting
dates.
Attend student run meetings at the high school (currently 2x month, Thurs
at noon,
about 20 minutes).
Schedule students to attend 2 Rotary meetings, one in the fall and one in
the spring.
They conduct the meeting. Rotarians sponsor a student or two (buy lunch)
and get to
introduce students to our club after friendly interchange to learn what
students are
interested in, or pursing after high school.
Email Interact officer and teacher advisor with District notices and
service projects with
our club
Email with Rotary District with # students sending to RYLA
Email club treasurer and have payment sent to District RYLA
Take photos and submit stories to local newspaper of Interact and RYLA
actions
*III. Scholarships* - need a lead Rotarian
Objective: Provide scholarships to two or more graduating students for
college or trade school
education.
Time commitment and steps involved:
Email Mendocino HS athletic director/ counselor with any changes for
scholarship
application (sometimes no changes)
Collect scholarship applications from high school office when notified by
school (March
30 th , generally)
Assemble scholarship review team from our club (5-7 Rotarians including
lead Rotarian)
Distribute scholarship applications to team, set schedule for review
discussion and team
meetings, and select semi-finalists (could be Zoom or in person)
Communicate with high school and arrange for interviews date (April)
Interview finalists and select two (small panel of 2-3 Rotarians)
Attend scholarship awards night, present award letter (May)
Get student to send via email: headshot photo, brief summary of their
plans, financial
aid office where award will be sent, and proof of enrollment (May- August
emails)
Email Rotary club treasurer with scholarship payment information
Submit congrats scholarship award information to newspaper and media
*IV. Youth Study Abroad Exchange* – needs two Rotarians once up and running
Objective: Student study abroad experience. This is life changing for the
students, host families
and communities. Students are goodwill ambassadors who increase cultural
awareness, sowing
seeds of peace. This serves the outbound students of Mendocino and inbound
foreign students
coming to Mendocino. The requirements are that it be equal sending and
receiving, with host
families in both countries. The Rotary District facilitates and organizes
study abroad exchanges
with approximately ten foreign countries. Mendocino used to host and send
students for
decades and there is interest in resuming. Fort Bragg restarted their
program this year. The
Bosma family is currently hosting a student from Germany. Our last student
from Mendocino
went on the Fort Bragg exchange program as our program had folded due to
shortage of host
families for inbound students.
Time commitment and steps involved:
Serve as point of contact and liaison with Rotary District
Serve as point of contact for students, parents, host families and high
school
Interview candidate students
Attend trainings and get background checks for adults involved, including
host families
Line up potential host families for a few years out. Three host families
have students
about 3 months during a school academic year. Good for students experience,
and less
demanding for host families.

*In summary, we need 4 lead Rotarians* for the programs of our youth
services, and we need
Rotarians to join in on the program activities. I am working full time,
sometimes in Ukiah,
completing grad school and asking for your help. Having leads for Interact
and scholarships are
our top needs. I am more than happy to discuss any of these roles with you.
