We did it!! We met and had lunch a la carte at Mendocino Cafe. Thanks to Meridith, Manuel, Clara and Ivan for making it work for us. We will do it again, next week!!
Members present included Susan, Matt, Gary, Toby, Harold, Dean, John C, Jeff, Jesse, Scott, Jerry K and Annie Liner (12). Jesse was zoommaster, John C manned the front desk and Toby and John helped set up and clean up. Thanks to both for their help. We stored our stuff in the equipment shed!!
We zoomed but nobody signed in to the zoom. We need you guys and girls, particularly for these discussions which are aimed at shaping our activities for next year so please join us preferably with your presence or if you cannot be physically present by zoom next week.
We saluted the flag, said the pledge, collected happy dollars and fines, and raffled a bottle of wine which was won by Jesse.
We talked about social and fund raising events, which are summarized as follows:
Emphasis: Youth, Park, Community
June 27, possible table at Hospital 50th anniversary: we someone to man a table if we are to do it.
July 4: In the park, very low-key, put up and raise the flag, put up a billboard and a banner as we did last year, man a table to inform people about Rotary. No crowds, no barbecue, no band. The Humane Society may put its adoption van in the park.
Later in the summer, if and when we are well past the pandemic and sure we will be safe: something for the community, not to attract visitors, between major holidays: August 7? Possible activities: a band, a bicycle race around the headlands, a cornhole competition, a dog show, a trapeze act, face painting for kids. A barbecue. Tables for local NOGs and other interested parties. This could be a major kickoff to our social program for the year, and a cornerstone of our membership drive. We need someone to step forward to make this happen.
DIne Out Take Out Raffle (DOT): There was considerable support doing it again, probably in the fall as it was this year.
Golf Tournament: will take time to set up, could do a simple one this summer but if there are to be raffle or auction prizes, it will take longer. Need to avoid a conflict other fund raisers such as the DOT raffle.
Casino Night: there was considerable support for doing this in March, as before, Pete may be able to take the lead with help from a number of others.
We talked about projects:
Community: benches and wastebins for the Community Center, and possibly for the Park. John Cottle is working on this.
Youth: as scoreboard for the grammar school, requested by Ron Gold. Possibly do with the PTA. Need someone to work on this.
Connectivity: hardware, internet subscriptions and coaching for those in our community, primarily young and poor, who cannot connect. Need a social media/media specialist. We talked with the school about this last year, but cancelled when the Superintendent said they had funds from the State. The need may be appearing again. Need someone to look into this.
Covid 19: funding for the Street Medicine Program to provide access to vaccinations for street people. Jeff to call Linda Jo Sterns.
International: continue support to Savusavu Rotary for cyclone relief and possibly environmental improvement. Continue support to Port Vila Rotary and the Victory School of Hope for the boundary fence, aiming to complete the fence next year, which will require about $12,000. $5,000 from our club, $5,000 from Fort Bragg and $2,000 from Katikati. Jeff to follow up for Vanuatu, Matt for Fiji.
District Grant: final report for this year submitted, Jeff and Toby becoming qualified, can use next years grant for the community center and grammar school and scoreboard. Proposals needed by end of July. Jeff to help out.
Overall: possible fund raising
DOT Raffle: $8800Meetings in the Park: $2,000Casino Night: $6,000Golf Tournament: $9,000 District Grant $2,400
Total $28,200
Overall possible avenue of service funding:
Community Center Benches $2400Scoreboard: $2,400Connectivity and/or NGOs: $5,000Covid 19: $2,000International (Vanuatu and Fiji): $6,000Disaster Relief: $3,000Scholarships, Dictionaries: $5,300Other: $2,100 Total: $28,200
We can do it!! Just need to flesh these out get it going.
All who have ideas, suggestions, comments please get them to Toby and myself before the next meeting.
We talked about membership and resolved we need to do a drive for new members as well as reach out to those who have withdrawn. Jeff, Toby and Jerry will take this on.
Mike is collecting requests for name badges, Rotary clothing etc. Get your request to him. Time is getting late.
The pandemic golf tournament attracted only 3 teams: Jeff and Toby, Gary and Pete, and Mike and Gary Graham. However, it looks like a good competition and the rules are working well. All players should aim to complete 3 18 hole rounds by June 20 so we can close it by the end of the Rotary year.
The year end debunking will hopefully be held in the North Coast Brewery Pub, in the evening, on June 24. Jerry is setting this up. Jeff is working on awards.
Next meeting will be June 10, at the Cafe. Toby will chair. We will discuss the above and talk about key committee chairs. All members should aim to take the lead on something.
Let me have your feedback/comments. I will attempt to summarize them before next week.
However, I will be fishing.
