Dear All,
The letter below has been sent to all raffle ticket purchasers for whom we had an e-mail address. I hope each of you who sold tickets have already thanked those who bought them, but if not, and if you did not have an e-mail address we could use, please either copy this letter and send it to them or send me their e-mail address and I will take care of it..
Dear Rotary Raffle Ticket Purchaser;
Over the last year Mendocino Rotary has adjusted to the task of staying safe during the pandemic, while continuing its effort to make our community a better place to live. We have met weekly by zoom and heard talks by community leaders on subjects ranging from survival of the abalone fishery to trends in the real estate business and to managing the Covid-19 crisis. We have worked with a number of organizations with similar values including the Sherwood Oaks Health Center, the Mendocino Coast Children's Fund, the Food Bank, the Botany Club of Mendocino High School, the Gallery Book Shop, the Coastal Street Medicine program, the Adventist Health Mendocino Coast Hospital, the Mendocino Coast Clinic, Coast Mask Makers and with other Rotary clubs in Fiji, Vanuatu and New Zealand.
Working with our friends and partners we have continued the improvement of Rotary Park, which now has all-year walkways, improved drainage, a fence, a Christmas tree and picnic tables, and helped with trash pickup in the town of Mendocino and along Highway 1, We also provided college scholarships for outstanding high school graduates, books and dictionaries for third graders, winter clothing for street people, and funding for the construction of a toilet block and protective fence for the Victory School of Hope in Vanuatu, in the South Pacific. We helped mitigate the health, social and economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic through grants for mask making, personal protective equipment for health providers, meals for persons in quarantine, and food for persons in need. At the beginning of the pandemic we placed a sign in Rotary Park, still there, that says "Mendocino Rotary Welcomes You. Please be safe. Wear a Mask".
Our sources of revenue in normal times include raffles of prizes donated by members and friends, a casino night usually held in the winter and a golf tournament held during the summer. We could not do any of these due to the prohibitions on gatherings during the pandemic. To help close the gap we collected donations for Covid 19 mitigation from members and friends, and sold 100 tickets, each for a donation of $100, for a raffle of gift certificates at our world class local restaurants offering dining outdoors or takeout meals. Since we knew that the restaurant business had been set back by the prohibitions against indoor dining during the pandemic we purchased the gift certificates from them and in that way helped them sustain their businesses.
With the help of persons such as yourself we sold all 100 tickets and held the drawing for the winner on December 23, in Rotary Park. The winner was Monterey Thomas, an area resident, who has received his gift certificates is very happy. With the income from the raffle we have been able to cover our activities expenses during the first half of the Rotary year without drawing down our reserves.
Although the pandemic has limited our opportunities to meet face-to-face, we have learned to meet by zoom and do so at 12:00 on the first three Thursdays of the month. If you would like to learn more about Rotary and possibly join us for a zoom meeting please let me know by e-mail at joinrotary at mcn.org or message or call me at 707-536-6190.
Many thanks for helping us make the raffle a success.
Yours Truly,
