Jeff said a few words about Earth Day and Rotary, and Donna did the same for the Park and the work we and have been doing to plant environmentally friendly vegetation in it. Serena Acker organized the High School students. Matthew O'Halloran excavated and backfilled with planting soil the holes where the trees were to be planted, Ray Alarcon helped stake out the trees once they were in the ground, John Cottle led the trash pickup, and Leona Walden took photos. Other Rotarians present included Harold Hauck, Pete Rose, Toby Wade and Jeff Stubbs. Scott Roat joined us so we got a much-awaited chance to talk in person. About a dozen students helped out, and we could see they liked doing hands-on work for the community. We celebrated when the work was done with cookies for all.

> Earth Day is a secular event, designed to mobilize support for improved environmental protection, first celebrated on April 22, 1970, in the United States, and now observed each year on the same date by more than a billion persons in more than 190 countries. The recognition of the need for an Earth Day probably came out of Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring", published in 1962, and the rampant environmental pollution of the 1960's which culminated in a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara. Earth Day was the brainchild of Senators Gaylord Nelson and Pete McCloskey, who recruited a young activist, Denis Hayes, to create an organization and a movement. In 1970 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was created. Subsequently legislation was passed to help clean up our water, air and seas and to limit the environmental harm created by carbon fuels, chemicals and other pollutants. In 1990 the movement went global, and of course President Biden chose April 22 for the first Environmental Summit of his Presidency.

> For its part Rotary had until last year 6 areas of focus which included promotion of peace, providing drinking water and sanitation, preventing disease, improving maternal and child health, providing basic education and literacy, and undertaking local economic development. For 2020-21 Rotary added a seventh area of focus, protection of the environment. Rotary clubs throughout the world were encouraged to celebrate Earth Day and of course we took major steps this year to improve Mendocino Rotary Park.

> As we worked we talked about where we are going, and how we can handle some of our upcoming club events. Next week, on Thursday April 29, at 12:00 we will meet at Dean Watson's house, 31850 Wildwood Way, Fort Bragg, for a Board meeting similar to the one we had when we celebrated John Porter's career with our club. This time we will celebrate Joe Sparks' work, which included amongst other things the establishment of the Mendocino High School Interact Club. We may not need to have a Board meeting and if so this will be a regular meeting with Rotarians, friends and family invited. We will have a podium and loudspeaker, and hopefully a zoom connection, so that those of us who cannot physically attend can join in. Food and refreshments will be provided.

> On Sunday May 16 Donna and Lavender Grace Cinnamon are planning a celebration of World Bee Day in the Park with the aim being to encourage persons to make the Pollinator Protection Pledge and in that way put our club and its members on the map of our beautiful coastal region. We will have drumming, a chant, a dance performance, talks and possibly a raffle all aimed at preserving our pollinators and their role in our ecosystem. In order to limit the size of the gathering it will be for Rotarians, friends and family but it should be a lot of fun.
