Hi all,
Today in the Fort Bragg Rotary meeting we got an excellent update on support for Sherwood Oaks.
Five (or 8?) staff and 9 residents have the virus. Two residents have passed, one is getting better and should return soon, and another is gravely ill.
Staff are housed in a hotel, where things can be delivered to the door. The rooms have a small fridge and a microwave.
Food is needed for the staff, and for their families at home as well as some of the residents. Toiletries are also needed, and books and magazines.
Sherwood Oaks is under tremendous pressure, with an increased work load due to the illness outbreak coupled with a shortage of staff and stress on staff.
Eve Yeomans is compiling a table of staff, residents and their families needing support, where they are housed, how they can be contacted and what they need.
Fort Bragg Ford/Chrysler Sport will serve as a collection point but they do not have much refrigeration capacity, so if you are sending items that need to be kept cold call them first.
Mindy Slaughter is working out how to obtain and distribute food and toiletries. Options for food range from purchasing in bulk, purchasing for one staff and his/her family and ordering from a restaurant.
If you would like to contribute home cooked food, please be safe and wear gloves and a mask as it is prepared.
Drivers are needed to deliver food and toiletries. Harold has volunteered. I will volunteer also. We need others able to give their time and energy to help out for at least the next two weeks.
Drivers will be coordinated by a friend of John Cottle, a Mr. Oakes, at 707-964-7721.
Susan Keller has offered to contribute $100, and suggested purchasing meals at Cucina Verona. I hope others will help out in whatever way they can.
Fort Bragg Rotary has $500 in gift certificates for food that they can use to ease the burden on affected staff in the short run.
Lets all get together and show our support for what Dr. John Cottle is doing to help Sherwood Oaks. Drivers please contact Mr. Oaks. Others with food, toiletries and books to deliver please contact Mindy. Her office number is 707-272-2624 and her cell is 964-5915.
In a related development, Jason Morse, the Superintendent of the Mendocino School system, says schools will open for virtual learning on August 31. They need IT equipment, internet service subscriptions and meals for about 30 needy families. They have a family resource center with a social worker who can provide more information.
Toby Wade and I have both signed MOUs with the District, so we are qualified to submit a district grant request. We will prepare it this weekend.
Committee chairs please come prepared to discuss recent developments and budget requests. We will have about an hour because we will not have a speaker tomorrow.
Cheers,
Jeff Stubbs

Just so drivers know, Sport is happy to receive and deliver to your car, just call when you arrive. Dropoff at motel rooms is also no contact, knock and place the package on the doorstep and stand back, waiting to make sure it is received.
Thanks to all,John C

Hi John,
I can be a driver to deliver meals, hopefully 5 - 7 Club members will be able to help with this need I think the volunteer needs will be a topic for discussion at Thursday’s club meeting. Also, I think our club should consider adopting Sherwood Oaks as a Covid-19 Project for funding of the needs you identify as we progress through very difficult time.

Several nurses are living in isolation in order to protect their families and the community at large. Gifts of wholesome food would be most welcome and helpful. A balanced diet is a necessity, particularly in times of stress.

No personal contacts will be necessary, just place the package on the doorstep, step back and stay long enough to make sure they get it. Home cooked meals are terrific of course, and packaged deli or restaurant meals are good too. Any cash donations will be spent 100% on food.
