> DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,
>
> Sorry for the delay, I am behind because my computer decided to retire. So it has taken me a couple of weeks of stress to be able to re-create my Rotary records.
>

>
> Likely our low numbers through the first quarter of your year of service is due to the later start of our PEDAL 4 POLIO 2018 EVENT which took place this past week riding from Ft. Bragg ending up in Lakeport – a 300 mile event supporting POLIO PLUS.
>
> A number of clubs have ask me what can they do which is above and beyond their annual polio fundraisers to support not only the riders but also WORLD POLIO DAY – OCT 24.
> Every club received an email from PDG Bob Rogers which contained a pledge form. Encourage your members to meet Bob’s goal of surpassing last years PEDAL 4 POLIO fundraising total of $ 61 per Rotarian. Also take a small amount of your President’s time each week to educate and encourage your members.
>
> Bob, myself & D.G. Barb strongly encourage each of you to ask every member in your club to financially support this life saving/life changing program. Today we are so close to the total eradication of the polio virus from the face of our planet – and I know that soon we will all celebrate the end of polio.
>
> So where are we today in terms of accomplishing our goal of the total eradication of the polio virus and thus insuring that a parent will never again fear their son or daughter waking up one morning paralyzed?
>
> First I need to clarify a news article originating in Minnesota last month detailing 6 young children being treated for a viral type infection similar to polio including symptoms of muscle weakness in the arms & legs, difficult swallowing, slurred speech & lethargy. Many of you may not be aware that lab work is done on each suspected case of polio – WORLDWIDE – to be able to accurately assess whether or not it is polio, the stain, and the origin of the virus. We have been doing this since the start of our immunization program.
> Lab tests came back on the 6 children in Minnesota detailing a rare viral infection called AFM –ACUTE FLACCID MYLETIS. It is not caused by the polio virus but is the result of a severe viral infection and is potentially serious and occasionally fatal. Polio Immunizations do not stop this particular virus.
>
> As of Oct 2, there have been 19 cases of type 1 polio virus cases worldwide compared to 11 at this time last year. This minor increase is not unexpected and it is important to note that 15 of these cases are in Afghanistan, 4 in Pakistan. Last year to date –Afghanistan had only 6 cases, Pakistan 5 cases. Nigeria remains at zero cases since Aug 2016.
> Immunizations continue on a scheduled basis in not only those 3 endemic countries but also in the Lake Chad Basin (Niger & bordering with Nigeria), DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Horn of Africa, Papua New Guinea, The Middle East. Funding for these immunizations continue because of Rotary (Rotarians), The Gates Foundation (2 for 1 matching for each $ 1 we raise ], our global partners around the world, corporations –profit and non profit, numerous counties, United Nations and many others.
> Remember when we initiated our campaign in 1988, there were 3 deadly strains of polio -today only 1 thanks to Rotarians around the world.
>
> I also want to extend my personal thanks for your support. I know that are many other important causes in the communities you serve including many that need your ongoing financial and personal support.
>
> This week also marks a terrible anniversary of the horrific fires that destroyed property – personal and businesses that may never be rebuilt in our 4 affected counties and countless lives – so the needs are many.
>
> Thanks to each one of you, we will continue to meet those needs & continue to serve others less fortunate.
>
> Yours in Rotary Service
