Dear Rotarians,
This year our club and district reached a high in Polio Plus giving- almost
$700,000 with matched funds, and largely I will hand it to those who gave
to the Rotary Foundation- more specifically to Polio Plus. Larry Meyers,
our Polio Plus chairperson and our District Governor Bob Rogers are both
childhood polio survivors. They know the suffering polio brings. John
Cottle deserves our gratitude for riding that incredibly tough Pedal for
Polio last August (and will ride again this year) and for donating some
serious funds for the cause. You continue to inspire us. We are near to
being a 100% for every Rotarian every year. To that one Mendocino
Rotarian- please- either see Gary, or go online to make it happen. Gary
has done an excellent job as our Foundation chair.
This Thursday will be our last club meeting of the year. (whoo- hoo!) Our
speaker will be Bob Matson, Elk Fire Department Volunteer firefighter (and
chief?), and Matt O' Halloran will be our fine-master. Please come and
bring a guest! The following Thursday is our board meeting at noon the
Mendocino Hotel. If you owe Harold dues (yes, one member does, and will be
voted out the following week for non-payment and non-involvement) or have
other business, he wont be there this Thursday. The new Rotary year begins
July 1.
Lastly, Frank Engelhardts memorial service will be at St Michaels of All
Angels in Fort Bragg on 6/23 at 11:00. Please join us in paying our
respects to his family and friends.
Warmly,
Donna

*DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,*
*As we approach the end of another successful year of fundraising for POLIO
PLUS I want to bring you up to date on our financial accomplishments. Those
of you attending the District Conference in Sacramento last month were so
proud of our district’s response to the devastating fires in 4 of our
counties which not only destroyed many lives but dramatically changed the
financial stability of countless individuals and families.*
*Add to this our ongoing efforts to eradicate the potentially deadly polio
virus from our planet. Attached is the latest (a/o June 10) POLIO PLUS
FUNDRAISING REPORT which details $232,269 since July 1. The Gates
Foundation will add $ 464,538 making a total contribution to date of $
696,807. *
*Last week D.G. Bob received word from the Rotary Foundation that we (5130)
is in terms of per-capita fundraising for POLIO PLUS the # 16 district in
the WORLD.....Thanks to you our district will be officially recognized at
the Toronto Convention Polio Session. *
*Heath issues (Post Polio Syndrome & neuropathy due to both post-polio
syndrome & my battle against non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma) will keep me from
attending but Jill & I will be there in spirit to celebrate your
accomplishments at the session.*
*Sounds incredible but it truly reflects the Rotarians in this district and
their commitment to change lives and to save lives around the world. I am
so proud of each of you – not only this year but your dedication since I
became chair in 2002-03. Together we have made a difference. *
*During this time we have gone from PINOT FOR POLIO TO PEDAL 4 POLIO. *

*One last thought, only 8 cases of paralytic polio year to date – vs over
350,000 cases of children paralyzed in 1988 – the first year of world wide
immunizations.*
*We will soon complete the promise we made to parents around the world –
that there will be a day when a parent will never fear their son or
daughter waking up paralyzed with little hope of ever having a near normal
life. THANKS TO EACH ONE OF YOU.*
*Yours in Rotary Service,*
*Larry D. Myers, P.D.G., 5130 PROUD...POLIO PLUS CHAIR*
