Fellow D5130 Club and District leaders,

On Monday, I sent out some information from Rotary International regarding
changes to policy as it relates to weapons.

As you might imagine, RI staff received quite a bit of feedback from clubs
and districts expressing concern about the decision and asking for further
clarification.  In response, RI staff has drafted the attached FAQ.

It is also important to understand that a Rotary Policy addressing guns and
weapons has been in place for many years.  To quote from the current Code
of Policy, “RI will not accept a sponsorship that supports the use of
addictive or harmful products and activities, guns or other weapons.”  The
Board of Directors reviewed this issue to provide more clarity to an overly
vague policy.  The current Rotary Board did not institute the original
policy.

It is our hope that with this additional perspective and information, it
will mitigate the concerns of those who have expressed dissatisfaction with
the announcement of this policy.  However, I recognize that there can be
differing opinions as to whether this policy is ideal or even necessary.
Please understand that this decision was taken strictly with the best
interest of Rotary in mind.  It is the hope of your Rotary Board that with
a greater understanding of the situation, we can join together in Service
Above Self to Do Good in the World.
