*DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,*
*I am forwarding a current article in the Feb. R.I. END POLIO NOW
newsletter highlighting our own ROTARY CLUB OF SONOMA VALLEY – see page 3.*
*Rotarians in Sonoma Valley have been sponsoring a PURPLE PINKIE DAY
YEARLY in their elementary and middle schools for the past 15+ years. A
combination of a fundraiser but even more importantly educating their
community on the role of their Rotary Club in the worldwide eradication of
POLIO.*
*Sonoma Valley is just 1 of many of our clubs that annually not only raise
substantial funds for ending polio but also do an excellent job of
communicating their role in their local community and also making a
difference in our world community.*
*I am so proud of each of our clubs and the role our Rotarians play each
day in saving children’s lives through the eradication of the polio virus. *
*We are truly close to the time that we will be celebrating the last case
of polio ever on the face of our planet. The second infectious disease ever
eliminated - and yes thanks to ROTARIANS.*
*Please share this with your members.*
*Yours in Rotary Service.*
*Larry D. Myers, P.D.G., 5130 Polio Plus Chair*
Sonoma Valley Rocks!!!
Hi everyone…if you haven’t seen it, check out the first article in the
section entitled, Activities Roundup.
You guys made the Big Time :-)
On behalf of PolioPlus Chair Larry Myers and myself, thank you for all you
do to eradicate polio…and then bragging about it…just what we’re supposed
to do.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Bob

Rotary Staff Experience Polio Eradication Efforts in Action
India has not reported a polio case since 2011, thanks largely in part to
massive vaccination and surveillance campaigns that led to the country
being officially certified polio-free in 2014. Subnational Immunizations
Days continue in order keep India polio-free. For the first time, Rotary
International staff members worked alongside health workers and volunteers
in the field to help with polio eradication efforts. Read

Miles to End Polio Exceeds Fundraising Goal
In November 2016, the Miles to End Polio team, which included staffers from
Rotary International, including General Secretary John Hewko, joined
Rotarians from District 5500 and around the world, to bike up to 104 miles
in the El Tour de Tucson
<http://echo4.bluehornet.com/ct/92102661:TWFt0Cb3N:m:1:995552893:C4D88F875F7E79C504EE9486FBCDB86C:r>
bike race in Arizona, USA. Their hard work raised more than $3.7 million
-- 11 percent more than their initial fundraising goal. The Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation tripled that donation, making the total raised for polio
eradication efforts $11.3 million.

polio awareness and eradication. In addition to learning about polio,
students donated $1 to color their pinkies purple, just like the children

Afghan clothes, food and music. Afghan Minister of Public Health Dr.
Ferozuddin Feroz also attended as the guest of honor.
In 2013, then 10-year-old twin brothers from Japan, Masaya and Tomoya,
asked that half of their gifts from Santa Claus be donated to polio
eradication. That year, each brother made a donation of ¥5,000 JPY to End
Polio Now. They have continued to make Christmas contributions every year
since. On 16 December 2016, the Rotary Club of Toyooka, Japan, recognized
the brothers as Paul Harris Fellows.
