*DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,*

*Attached is the latest POLIO PLUS financial report a/o Dec 4. It details a
total of $ 165,191 for the first 5 months of your year as club president.
Currently we are only $ 30,000 less than the total POLIO PLUS fundraising
for last year – 2016-17. *
*D.G. Bob & I have you and your support of PEDAL 4 POLIO to thank for this
early jump start for 2017-18. Since my 11.1.17 email, Sonoma Valley has
contributed an additional $ 5200, along with substantial contributions from
Cloverdale, Ft. Bragg, Healdsburg Sunrise, Petaluma Sunrise, Santa
Rosa, S**ebastopol
& Sebastopol Sunrise. I know many of your clubs have been financially
supporting the relief efforts to help the tremendous number of fire victims
this past 2 months. Rotary & Rotarians will always be there to support the
communities we serve helping those in need. I see it in Mendocino County
where the number of homes destroyed are a fraction of those in Sonoma
County but the effect on our community is devastating. *
*D.G. Bob & I talked in length about this at the North R.F. Dinner last
month in Eureka. The need to substantially assist fire victims in their
recovery efforts but continue to encourage additional polio fundraising to
complete our # 1 goal – the eradication of polio. Last month I mentioned a
number of clubs who have yearly polio eradication fundraisers. I listed
those clubs who have scheduled early spring fundraisers & I hope to hear
from you so I can also promote the specifics of your event. PLEASE LET ME
KNOW THE DETAILS SO I CAN PASS THE INFO ALONG.*

*So where are we today in terms of the eradication of the polio virus? YTD
2017 16 cases of polio (Afghanistan 11, Pakistan 5) compared to 34 cases
YTD 2016. WE ALWAYS KNEW THAT THE LAST CASES WOULD BE THE MOST DIFFICULT TO
TOTALLY ERADICATE & THIS IS THE CASE TODAY. *
*However this year Pakistan has made considerable progress down to just 5
cases compared to 20 cases in 2016. How has this happened? Primarily due to
increased cooperation & communication within the Muslin community, Federal
Government, and our Global Partners including Rotary. August 20 was the
last case & we truly feel that Pakistan has a real opportunity to soon end
the transmission of the polio virus. We are on the verge of seeing the last
case ever in Pakistan. In October, we successfully vaccinated over 26.3
MILLION CHILDREN. Pakistan has also set up 376 Permanent Transit Points
across the country that vaccinated over 1.7 million children in transit.*
*So many times in the past I have discussed the problem of cross border
transmission of the polio virus but a country as geographically diverse as
Pakistan has to also deal with certain population groups being isolated
making it difficult to immunize. Pakistan seems to have resolved many of
those problems & I feel is on the way to total eradication of the virus.*
*Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to closely cooperate in terms of
scheduling concurrent immunization campaigns. Currently Afghanistan in
cooperation with Rotary and our Global Partners is using a new method to
test for immunity to the polio virus. It is called Serosurveys & is a
simple test of the blood serum which measures the immunity to different
diseases. Our polio immunization campaign uses this to see what level of
protection a child has against the poliovirus to assess whether the
vaccination campaigns are reaching enough children, enough times, to give
them immunity. Recent results show that Afghanistan is closer than ever to
eradicating polio with more than 95% of children surveyed immune to type 1
virus. This will also point out any areas under-immunized so they can be
targeted in their next campaign. Last month a campaign targeted an
underserved area & reached over 202,000 children who were under-immunized.
Afghanistan also has 398 permanent transit teams in place and also support
16 cross border immunization points.*
*So just wanted you to know there is much taking place that will expedite
our successful completion of a promise we made to parents & children way
back in 1988, that some day there will be morning that a parent will never
have to fear their son or daughter waking up paralyzed with little or no
hope of recovery. *
*I will never forget that morning as a 6 year old waking up paralyzed.*

*THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.*

*Larry D. Myers, P.D.G., 5130 Polio Plus Chair*

*S*
