*DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,*

*Attached is the latest polio eradication fundraising update for 5130 a/o
Oct. 3. Total polio contributions since July 1 = $ 21,645 which
substantially less than the $ 40,000 plus that was received at this point
in 2015. Petaluma Valley made a substantial contribution this past month
along with a large number of smaller club contributions but my concern is
the immediate need for additional funding for the aggressive immunizations
campaigns now scheduled for 9 countries including and surrounding Nigeria.*

*REMEMBER – THE GATES FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTIONS – $ 2 FOR EVERY $ 1 WE RAISE
THIS YEAR – ARE ONLY FOR POLIO ERADICATION.*
*Contributions to the general fund of our Rotary Foundation are not added
to by Bill & Melinda Gates. The general fund contributions are invested and
not distributed for 3 years.*
*Funds contributed and directed to polio plus are distributed the same year
they are received – plus the Gates contributions are also distributed at
the same time.*
 *Also contributions to POLIO PLUS are also credited to EVERY ROTARIAN
EVERY YEAR.*

*Last month I talked about past setbacks to our goal of the total
eradication of polio – each time Rotarians and our Global Partners have
overcome those temporary challenges. Today year to date - only 29 cases in
3 endemic countries since Nigeria has been re-added to Afghanistan and
Pakistan as being the last 3 endemic countries.*

*So where are we in terms of our immunization program?*

*NIGERIA – the emergy regional outbreak response is continuing under the
guidance of the Polio Eradication Emergency Operations Center led by the
government of Nigeria along with support from WHO and GPEI partners. The
outbreak response is being coordinated with neighboring countries . NOTE –
SIMILAR APPROACHES TO OUTBREAK RESPONSE WERE SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED IN
PREVIOUS YEARS IN THE MIDDLE EAST, HORN OF AFRICA, CHINA, AND IN FORMER
RUSSIAN SATELLITES LOCATED ABOVE AFGHANISTAN. A campaign was conducted this
week in Borno using a combination of bivalent oral polio vaccine (OPV) and
IM inactivated polio vaccine (IPV – SALK TYPE VACCINE).*

*AFGHANISTAN – Importantly there have been zero environmental samples found
this year. The last positive samples are recorded in December 2015 which is
the first time we have seen this breakthrough. Immunizations continue and
are coordinated with Pakistan. Immunization campaigns are scheduled in
October and November.*

*PAKISTAN – we continue to find positive environmental samples which are of
great concern. This confirms that virus transmission continues to be
geographically widespread across the country. The emphasis now is on
efforts to further strengthen immunization and surveillance activities in
all provinces of the country. Immunizations are scheduled for October and
November.*

*Lake Chad Sub-region – close proximity to Nigeria – remains a strong
concern. An emergency outbreak response is taking place which includes an
aggressive campaign including goals to immediately reach over 10 million
children in CAR, Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon. Security remains a concern
along with accessibility due to flooding during the current rainy season.*

*WEST AFRICA – NID’s are scheduled for Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone,
Niger, Benin, Mali, and Mauritania.*

*I know I sometimes give you too much detail but I want each of you to
understand just how critical your monetary contributions and ongoing
support is to our goal of totally eradication the polio virus from this
planet. *

*As you know October 24th is END POLIO DAY and I hope that this month each
of you will set aside a part of your President’s time to promote this live
saving/life changing program. *

*ALSO THIS MONTH WE AR CELEBRATING OUR TWO ROTARY FOUNDATION DINNERS. I AM
HOPING THAT YOU WILL SET ASIDE A PORTION OF YOUR ROTARY FOUNDATION TICKET
PURCHASES TOWARDS POLIO ERADICATION.*
*REMEMBER EACH $ 1 DIRECTED TO POLIO PLUS BECOMES $ 3 THANKS TO THE GATES
FOUNDATION. THE ONLY PROGRAM OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION SUPPORTED BY BILL AND
MELINDA GATES.*

*I know that we will overcome this latest setback  and soon the polio virus
will be 100% eliminated from our planet. Soon we will fulfill a promise we
made to parents and children – that there will be a day in the near future
that a parent will never fear their son or daughter waking up one morning
paralyzed. I will never forger that morning.*
