DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,

Attached is the latest POLIO ERADICATION FUNDRAISING UPDATE FOR 5130 A/0 FEB 4.
Total polio contributions since July 1, 2015 = $ 138,166. Twenty nine clubs have contributed at least $ 1000. Sebastopol = $ 26,602, Willits = $ 8910, Sonoma Valley = $ 7877, Santa Rosa Sunrise = $ 7744, Calistoga = $ 7270, Healdsburg = $ 6126, Mad River = $ 5343, Sebastopol Sunrise = $ 5019, Ft. Bragg = $ 4990, Cloverdale = $ 4880, Crescent City = $ 4668, Eureka = $ 4654, Mendocino = $ 3621, Napa = $ 3597, South Ukiah = $ 3528, Petaluma Sunrise = $ 3519, Windsor = $ 2676, Fortuna Sunrise = $ 2576, Kelseyville Sunrise = $ 2327, Ukiah = $ 2304, Santa Rosa West= $2195,  Southwest Eureka = $2190, North Napa = $ 1690, Arcata Sunrise = $ 1675,  Rohnert Park-Cotati = $ 1496, Garberville = $ 1383, Saint Helena = $ 1205, Petaluma Valley = $ 1079, Lakeport = $ 1000.

I also want to highlight a number of small clubs whose per capita giving for polio eradication is outstanding: Willits = $ 217, Crescent City = $ 141, Mad River = $ 141, Calistoga = $ 125, Santa Rosa Sunrise = $ 123, Mendocino = $ 121, Cloverdale = $ 116, Kelseyville Sunrise = $ 111, South Ukiah = $ 107.

Of course Sebastopol Rotary continues to lead our district in polio eradication giving at $ 249 per capita.

And yes, we are awaiting contributions from 5 clubs so can accomplish the goal of D.G. Erin to have 100% of our clubs contributing to our END POLIO campaign. We are awaiting contributions from CLEARLAKE, GUALALA, HEALDSBURG SUNRISE, MIDDLETOWN, OLD TOWN EUREKA. District 5130 clubs have routinely been 100% contributors to polio eradication.

I know that the Healdsburg clubs are working towards their St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser, Valley of the Moon normally dedicates a portion of their Follies proceeds to Polio, Napa Sunrise told me they would be sending in additional funds, Garberville normally has a late spring fundraiser for polio and I am sure that there are a number of other clubs that have spring events scheduled.

PLEASE REMIND YOUR ROTARIANS THAT THE GATES FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO DONATE $ 2 FOR EACH $ 1 WE RAISE SPECIFICALLY FOR POLIO ERADICATION.
ALSO THIS YEAR  AND FUTURE YEARS -YOUR EVERY ROTARY – EVERY YEAR DONATION INCLUDES CREDIT FOR POLIO ERADICATION FUNDS. THIS WAS A LONG TIME COMING. EACH DOLLAR YOU DONATE TO POLIO CONTINUES TO BE FULLY TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

So where are we today in terms of our goal of the total eradication if polio?

Total cases in 2015 = 72, in the 2 endemic countries of Afghanistan (19 cases) and Pakistan (53 cases) The African continent remains polio free.

In 10 weeks, we will discontinue administering the trivalent polio vaccine, switching to the oral bivalent vaccine and supplementing this with a dose of the IM Salk type killed vaccine. Currently Rotary and our Global Initiative Partners are funding immunizations in the following countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, CAR, Congo, Cameroon, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, Yemen, Lao, Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, Niger,  Sierra Leone, Madagascar,  Myanmar, Nigeria, Ukraine.

We must continue to immunize children until the polio virus is totally eradicated. Again last year only 72 cases worldwide, this year we know that number will again dramatically decrease until there will be a day when our promise is fulfilled. Parents and children will no longer fear a morning when their child might wake up paralyzed.
I remember that day as a 6 year old in Los Angeles. I can’t imagine how my life would have turned out if I would have been a child in a 3rd world country.
