[Rotary] Regarding ticket sales for Casino Night

Are we over thinking this?
Can Kathleen pipe in on the tax deduction issue?
I thought it is only considered a charitable donation when nothing is received in return?
So if they are getting a ticket is that even deductible?
As a business the sponsorship of a table is considered advertising but I guess if an individual sponsored a table writing the check to the foundation may be a tax benefit.
I can see donations for the park (where nothing is received in return) being made out to the Foundation for the tax benefit of the donor.
But are we complicating this issue with the way it is being used for Casino Night?

John,
You raise an interesting point, the checks for a Rotary Club fund raising event like Casino Night need to be made out to the Mendocino Rotary Foundation for tax deduction purposes. However, I think I as the Rotary Club Treasurer I should receive all checks and cash generated by Casino Night. I will deposit any cash in the Activities Account and log all checks received. I will then deliver those checks to the foundation for them to deposit into their account and when I receive a check from the foundation representing the total Casino Night check deposits, I will in turn deposit the Foundation’s check in the clubs Activity account.
I think that will be the simplest way to handle it.
Harold

Keep in mind checks made out to the Foundation are NOT available for meeting the Club's expenses and avenues of service. I think it is a bad idea to tell people
to make checks to the Foundation. We lose control of how that money is spent. The CLUB will make donations to the Foundation depending on what we can afford in light of other commitments. John P

Hi everyone,
The question came up at our table at last weeks meeting. "Who should I turn the money in to- for the ticket sales, Harold?"
My recommendation is that if it is a check, or checks, mail to:
Mendocino Rotary Club
PO Box 102
Mendocino, CA 95437
If cash, of course it will need to be given to Harold.
Another question that came up, " Who should they make out the checks to?" The answer is: Mendocino Rotary Foundation (which is a 501c3). Most everyone would like to make a donation with a tax benefit, so have them made out to our Mendocino Rotary Foundation.
Do you have thoughts regarding these questions? President John, can we bring up this topic for brief clarification at our next meeting? We finally have s system established for accepting checks for Rotary Park and the Foundation, and giving thank you notes in a timely manner. We could discuss, or maybe run a scenario, because I expect I'll hear some questions, such as how much of the funds raised from Casino Night are to go for various projects? I am wondering if we are going to use percentages.
Thanks,
Donna
