We all owe a big debt of gratitude to Matt for taking the lead on cleaning up Rotary Park. No doubt you all saw the photo that I sent yesterday of him and me raking and filling up i'm a trailer that Matt provided.
Today Dean and I went to Rotary Park with a chainsaw and the idea that we didn't want to scare anyone into thinking that trees were going to be cut down. Dean came in his official CDF Jacket and gear so I imagine folks felt okay about having anyone related to fire prevention trimming trees in the park.
In any case, we went to work on a Pine tree carefully limbing it and making sure that it looked uniform all around. We even disguised the cuts with dirt so they didn't look fresh or noticeable. We carefully cleaned up all the dropped material.
Something very positive came out of our efforts. The owner of the headlands inn came over with a big smile on her face and said she was hoping that we would clean up the trees so the guests could have ocean views again. In fact she said that there are several B and B owners and restaurant folks in the area who have lost their views to the overgrown trees in Ridley Park and would be willing to chip in to pay for the removal of branches from the tree to open up views that they used to have many years ago.
As you look around the park, you can see that there are still many long heavy lambs extending over the streets and creating a potential hazard. You can also see that with some work and some help from professional tree folks with heavy duty equipment can help us get the park looking really great and make it safer for visitors. Matt says he can help us with that.
Of course we have our own tree cutting master in Dean Watson who did a great job today making a few of the trees look beautiful. Overall, it was a very satisfying morning and it felt really good to be a Rotarian.
