Boudewijn Boom

Article by Brittany K. Roney

Artwork by Eva Trujillo

Pronounced “Bough (as in the main branch of a tree)-De-Vein,” Boudewijn Boom came to The Legacy as a skilled craftsman under the briefly used name “Owen” in June of 2022. Once we all learned how to say his name correctly, we discovered the vast universe of talent and depth he passionately carries into the world. Boudewijn can easily be summarized as a Renaissance man, but even that description barely scratches the surface of his gifts. His creativity is showcased in everything he touches, from his garden to his designer shopping bags that he handcrafts and donates to The Legacy.

Boudewijn first came to The Legacy as an already established volunteer at our parent organization, The Sebastopol Area Senior Center, where he helped seniors with technology and as a driver. His humble beginnings at The Legacy included folding and reorganizing our upholstery fabric isle. As our old, seen-better-days shelves began to threaten public safety, he would run home for tools to repair and reinforce where he could. It wasn’t long before Boudewijn began assisting in the back room as donations piled in.

His biggest signature achievement in our organization is building and singlehandedly maintaining our Legacy eBay store from scratch in 2023. Sifting through buried treasures in our old donation room, he would occasionally come across something rare and with a twinkle, announce, “This would sell on eBay!” To date, Boudewijn has donated close to 3,000 hours of his time and energy running The Legacy’s Ebay store amounting to tens of thousands of dollars of sales over the past three years. All of the money has helped enhance services offered at the Senior Center.

Boudewijn’s spiritual philosophy carries into every facet of his work and his life. He is community driven and operates at a frequency that inspires everyone he works with at the shop. Born in The Hague, Netherlands, his childhood and young adult life reflected a strong connection with people and nature. His curiosity and thirst for awakening led him to living and working among intentional communities in India (Auroville) and Scotland (Findhorn).

Boudewijn immigrated to the US in 1980 and currently thrives in Sebastopol with his warm and talented wife, Amrita and their adorable sighthound, “Jazz.”

We often receive interesting items as donations, and sometimes it takes some detective work to get to the bottom of “What is this?” This time, Eva set out on a mission to learn all about this artisan cloth. Read on for what she discovered!

On our social media, we recently asked what this beautiful cloth was. Thanks to you all and the SRJC Museum, we learned it was likely a Tapa cloth from Tonga! So what is a Tongan tapa cloth? Also called Ngatu, a tapa cloth is made from the inner bark of a Hiapo/mulberry tree that is beaten with a mallet to flatten it. The flattened strips are then joined together with glue to turn it into a larger piece. The cloth is then decorated by groups of women with natural dyes. The women work on a curved surface to not wrinkle the cloth.

The article Ngatu, Cultural Wealth of the Kingdom of Tonga from the googles arts and culture section describes some of the cultural and traditional uses of the ngatu today.

“In the Kingdom of Tonga, cultural and social rituals are still practiced and has become a part of our daily lives. Ngatu has many roles and value, depending on the context of that particular ritual. A deceased loved one could be wrapped with a ngatu for burial, and they are also presented as gifts during birthdays and weddings. The ngatu is highly valued as a cultural gift and is presented in a reciprocal manner, therefore ngatu is amongst a Tongan woman's prized possession, symbolizing cultural wealth and prestige. Also, ngatu itself is the traditional dance costume used in most of the Tongan dances.  The use of ngatu in handicrafts is highly noted, used as a decorative ornament, and also adds a cultural touch. ”

We feel so lucky to have been donated this beautiful cultural artifact and have been trying to figure out what to do with it to honor it properly. We are still undecided about who to give it to. Have ideas? Let us know by responding to this email.
