Hi All.
At Sunday's meeting some of you asked how I made the narrow frame and border around one of my quilts. Here are the instructions:
Here is Ricky Tims’ method for creating a narrow frame witha border. Taken from his book, ConvergenceQuilts:
1. Cutthe frame strips about ¾” wide. Cut the contrastingborder strips however wide you want the border.
2. Placethe frame strip on the quilt with right sides together. Check to make sure that the narrow strip ison top, wrong side up. Carefully matchthe edges and accurately sew using a ¼” seam.
3. Ratherthan pressing the seam toward the frame, press the seam toward the quilt (this is important). Sew on all four pieces. Press each frame strip toward the quilt.
4. Positionthe quilt top wrong side up. Place theborder strip underneath the quilt top, right sides together, matchingthe edges of the frame strip and border strip.
5. Instead of using the right side of the presserfoot as your guide, use the left side of the presser foot. Butt the presser foot into thesewn seam, against the line of stitching you created in Step 2. Sew your seam, then press toward the borderstrip. Sew border strips on all foursides.
Now this is me talking:
1. Aftersewing on the border strip, you can re-press the seam between the quilt and theframe strip towards the frame strip. This can eliminate some bulk if your quilt top has a lot of seams in it.
2. Youcan also make a double border with the frame strip between the two parts of theborder. This way, when you press thefirst seam of the frame strip toward the quilt, there isn’t any problem withbulk.
Happy stitching!
-Evelyn
