recommended methods for cleaning & oiling your machine at home 

"What can I do to take care of my machine?" 

People ask us this question every day. You know you can always bring it to us for service, but you only need to do that every 1-4 years, so you may be curious what you can do in the meantime. In this email I am going to tell you: 
(1) the most important spot to oil on your machine 
(2) the best way to clean your machine 

oiling your machine 

When our technicians service your machine, they remove the plastic cover so they can can access a bunch of different oiling points. However, there is one oiling point on your machine that takes priority over all the rest, and it is one that you can easily access. If you only oil one spot on your machine, you should oil the hook race. 

The hooks race differs slightly depending on the type of machine. On machines designed with a front loading bobbin system (e.g. Bernina, older Pfaff), the hook race is the narrow metal ledge on which the hook rides: 

On machines designed with a top loading drop-in bobbin (e.g. Janome, Baby Lock, Brother), the hook race is narrow metal ledge on which the bobbin case rides: 

Why is the hook race important to oil? 

For every stitch your machine makes, the hook makes one complete revolution. As the hook makes a revolution on front loading machines, there is constant friction between the hook and the hook race. As the hook makes a revolution on top loading machine, there is constant friction between the bobbin case and the hook race. It is impossible to completely eliminate this friction-- it is intrinsic to the design of your sewing machine. That said, you can reduce the friction with a drop of oil.

Note #1: 
In both videos I put a drop of oil on the hook race, then turn the handwheel in order to spread the oil across the entire hook race. 

Note #2: 
How often should you oil the hook race? There is no single right answer to this question. Feel free to oil before starting a new project. Feel free to oil once a week. Feel free to oil if you think your machine sounds loud or feels dry. 

Note #3: 
One or two drops goes a long way. Try your best to not over-oil the hook race. 

cleaning your machine 

We suggest that you use canned air to clean the lint and dirt out of your machine. All of our technicians use a gigantic air compressor to clean out machines, so we suggest you do the next best thing, which is canned air. 

Now, there is a rumor pervading the sewing community that canned air is bad for the machine. I promise you that this is not true. Air cannot damage wires, loosen screws, or throw critical settings out of whack. I've heard people say they don't use canned air because it blows lint further into the machine. I suppose there is a sense in which this is true-- when you blow lint out of the hook area, some it may travel deeper into the machine. However, because of the way sewing machines are designed, that lint will likely fall to the bottom of the machine and sit on the bottom of the plastic cover. When you eventually bring it in for service, our technicians will take off the covers and get all the lint out of there. 

There are a few specific places to focus on when blowing out the machine. Whether you have a front loading machine or top loading machine, you definitely want to remove the bobbin case blow out the hook assembly area. It is important to remove the bobbin case, because tons of impacted lint can get stuck underneath, as seen in the video below: 

Another important spot to focus on is the feed dogs. If you look closely at the photo below, you can see that the grooves between the rows of feed dog teeth are filled with impacted lint. Make sure you blow out that lint or scrape it out with an old needle, because it can negatively effect how your machine feeds fabric. 

The last place to focus on blowing out is the tension disks. If lint builds up between your upper tension disks, it will throw the tension balance out of whack and cause poor stitch quality. So, raise the presser foot to separate the tension disks, then blow air in between the disks to clear out all that lint. 

We hope this email helps you better understand how you can clean and oil your machine. While it's a good idea to bring your machine into the shop every 1-4 years for a full tune-up and service, these tips will help you maintain your machine in the meantime.
